Man, I wrote a big long thing about scrog (you know at this point how i like to go on about it lol) and then my browser was all "no, we're not doing that" so this is take 2, i apologize if its more brief than i intended lulz!
A brief of my reasoning behind using scrog; In Vt medical growers are only allowed 2 flowering plants at a time so to deal with the patients needs and keep costs low we try to produce as much as we can with a minimal amount of actual plants, alot of Vt grower use the "tree" method, grow it as big as you can (i have seen some 6ft and not into flowering yet) this is ineffective i feel, you end up with alot of "trunk" and a big bulky top that you have to tie up all over the place. I found scrog to be the best way to use as many lumens as possible in a small space (4x4 or whatever your light source recommends) controlling the canopy allows us to get a "big" plant but still control the flower growth so that you aren't wasting energy on a trunk or a shit pile of fan leaves (some scroggers trim fan leave voraciously) anything under the canopy can be trimmed away and energy isn't wasted on keeping them alive yet not working.
About strains that work best in scrog, yes, most hardcore scroggers use sativas, this is mostly because they veg that much faster and turnaround is better, I have seen a few very successful indica scrogs but again, it takes longer. The "recommended" veg time for a VK is 3 weeks, this is almost no time at all for a scrog, I'm sure i will have them vegging for double that but again, i can afford that time as i cant even start to flower til my other harvest is done (sad panda), that 3 week veg time works exceptionally well if you have 100 plants in a greenhouse and dont care how big they get because your turnaround time is nil lol.
The restriction I have most likely dont apply to you, the only other issue with "straight grows" is phenotype, if you get all indica phenos thats great! they will grow at similar rates and your tops will be nice and plump, if you get a sativa pheno your light hight will be dictated by how tall that one plant gets and the rest will suffer, scrog eliminates this by keeping a uniform canopy no matter the pheno, one plant may flower a few inches taller than the rest but thats considerably easier to deal with than the several feet difference i have seen between phenos of the same strain.
Just some stuff to chew on, I'm super excited to see how your grow turns out either way, i figure share my knowledge like so many have done for me, shit, the guy who trained me 10+ years ago thinks scrog is a "dumb waste of time" and "only for super "anal" growers" lol, he harvests about half what i harvest and the difference in quality is non-existent so i obviously think what I'm doing is better but i also spend time with my plants every day, he changes his res every 7 days and thats all he sees of them til harvest so theres that to take into account.
