I've tried it.
Pet ether is like rocking horse shit, you won't find it easily.
If I'm honest I'd say that you were smoking/growing shit dope. Just do more research on the strains you grow and you won't need to risk your life purifying crap weed.

why i asked is because i have access to all of this equipment and material. im more interested in the science of creating the purest oil i can and understanding the process, not purifying "crap weed" . thanks for the response but every time i ask a question on this site about the science of something i never get an answer just criticism. i ask a question about hash oil, you tell me i grow crap weed? i ask about LED technology they say it dosnt work, when it does its just VERY expensive. I google before i post and wish i could get an intelligent answer to my questions instead of always being told to fuck off basically. don't worry, no more questions from me, lets not expand our knowledge. I like being a tool...

emot-eng101.gif Making hash is concentrating weed, not purifying it.

And acetone is the better solvent. It evaporates cleaner, and leaves less residue.

petroleum ether is the best thing to use. Understand though that it isn't just a specific substance. It is a general classification of hydrocarbons, and will usually be classified by its boiling point. It is very flammable, and you have to be much more careful with it than most other substances you can use (except chloroform). You don't reflux the pet ether though, usually you would use something like pure isopropyl or ethyl to reflux, then you would do an extraction using the pet ether. Anyway, acetone works too, and is much easier to get.

pet ether is typically a better solvent for extracting cannabinoids (non-polar) than acetone, though they are close. It's hard to get though, slightly more dangerous than acetone, and I think it might be used for making meth or something.

Hash oil is actually what you would call an extraction :) Hash is more general, and can be oil mixed with carbon, or a mechanical extraction of oils and smaller amounts of carbon.

My mistake, I thought you asked if it was worth it. On the basis that pet ether can explode and cause harm simply through friction I would say not.
If you want a complete guide try to track down a copy of Cannabis Alchemy by David Gould. It's the best study I've ever seen on the subject and later editions included comments and feedback from several people who followed his procedures.

EDIT: Sorry, the autor is David Gold.
