I have used this method in the past and it works well. But, it is not convenient and quite the pain in the butt!!!
You take a thick paper bag and make a sleeve to cover one of the big fan leaves. You put it on for 12 hours so it receives 12 hours of lights and is covered for 12 hours. That node where the fan leaf is attached to the main stem will show sex prematurely. I used to plant a little post in the pot and tie the sleeve to the post in order to support its weight and avoid damage to the fan leaf.
I figured it was common knowledge but I have seen a lot thread around the topic of finding out the plant's sex and I have not seen this method mentionned anywhere...
I find it easier to pay for feminized seeds and/or make clones than using regular seeds, but it's not possible for everyone. In the case you only grow one at a time, this is not too painful to do and it can save you time by enabling you to find out if you have a male and start over earlier rather than later.
