Thanks folks, however the meter has just the weakness i feared: it reads in lumens (or Lux which are proportional) and thus "corrects" for human visual spectral sensitivity.

I found this review of two better meters ... they measure PAR across a range of color spectra. And while the one you found me was cheaper than I'd hoped, these are much more expensive than i'd feared. cn

I might grab a cheaper bulb, and a hortilux next time and do a side by side sog. Hortilux can be had for like $80 each for 600, or if you buy a few at once more like 70$
