I started with hydroton. It's PITA to use, clean, and reuse. It breaks down and will become part of the nutrient. Harmless but it cn clog things up. After that experience is whn I went to polished stones.That's pretty cool..!
btw I vote for hydroton
As long as the stones are solid (unlike hydroton) you should be fine
