Let's look at this for a moment. What exactly is horse manure? It is grassy materiel such as hay and grass and oats that has been partialy digested. In that manure is a huge amount of dead and living bacteria that are portions of what the horse uses to break down these lignous materials - right?

The mushroom you are growing is a primary and secondary decomposer, in other words, it will continue the process of decomposition started by other things, such as bacteria and thermophilic organisms active in compost. OR - it will break down higher orders of organic material.

Of course the horse manure is partialy decomposed as well. Some of the nutrient in the original hay/grass has been taken up by the horse, the horse does manage to absorb some nutrients from the lignin through certain bacteria in its gut. So aside from the more compact state of the manure, why would one use it over fresh, clean, non-smelling, automaticaly field moisturized straw?
