Pollen Chucking

I'm just curious why there is so much hate for people who try to make their own seeds at home. I've read so many things about it, and the one thing that almost all of these threads have in common is the people who chime in to bash pollen chuckers like their home experimenting is going to cause the downfall of the world's quality marijuana supply.

So my question is, is it really that terrible a thing to have a stash of (free) seeds that don't all produce the exact same phenotypes? Unless the person doing the pollen chucking is trying to sell the seeds by claiming to have high-quality, stable genetics, who cares if they're producing seeds with many different characteristics? I just don't understand the hate.

I've been reading about this because I have some great seeds from reputable breeders and I want to try it for myself. I will be doing this purely for fun, and to satisfy my own curiosity. As soon as my current grow (Purple Kush and Sugar Kush) is finished, I'm going to pollinate a Purple Kush female from Crop King seeds with a Medicine Man male from Mr. Nice. I fully understand that the offspring will not be a stable, true-breeding strain, and I don't care. Personally, I think that will be half the fun of it. I love the idea of not always knowing exactly what I'm going to get. Obviously there will be some good and some bad, but I'm looking forward to these surprises.

All of us here have one thing in common - the most amazing hobby on Earth. Why is there so much disrespect for people who want to experiment?

Lolz - If I ever get another male, I'm going to isolate it and harvest the pollen. But for now I'm doing the next worst thing.....bag seed:fire:. Because I'll be damned if I ever pay $10 or more for a fucking seed.

Nobody? IMO every grower should create seeds occasionally. As a matter of fact, it's generally, especially for smaller growers who don't care about an oz sensimilla more or less, stupid not to create some seeds with your best plants. Besides that, it's what many if not most commercial self-proclaimed breeders do too, pollenchuck phenotypes... and sell it as a strain. The industry is 95% scam, not creating your own seeds is just going along with that. Sheople behavior. Cross any two good plants and there will be keepers in the resulting seeds, just like most packs of seeds people buy nowadays...

That is phenohunting and indeed a lot of fun, addictive by itself. It's similar to what many commercial breeders do (recurrent pheno selection) with the difference that they look for the same/similar pheno instead of something new over and over.

For the better "seeds" that is not as expensive as people often claim. By growing a good amount of seeds to sell the grower gets far less bud. If those seeds are the result of an actual breeding program over several generations and test grows, that's a lot of cannabis that is easier and faster to sell entirely than seeds.

I forgot his name, think it was one of the mods, who recently said seeds should be $2 or so. While I agree that is at most the value of the pollenchucked find-a-keeper pack, stabilizing and maintaining a strain for years costs more than that $2 per seed. While $2 seeds may seem attractive, it will only cause the market to be flooded with more crap.

Seedbanks take up to 50%, so the breeder gets only half of that $10 per seed. I can sell a pound for $3000, or get thousands of seeds of which at least hundreds are not large/good/neat enough. I've had over 2K seeds while not pollinating all the buds. Let's say 4K quality seeds, x $10, is $40k. Half of that goes to the seedbank, $20K left. Good quality packaging and other minor costs, $19K left. If the seeds are an F1 pollenchuck based on stealing someone else's genetics and using popular cuts, that's minus the $3K of not being able to sell the bud, $16K, minus grow costs, let's round it to $15K profit. Now imagine a breeder who created a real F1 hybrid based on stabilizing two lines over many generations. While it's not necessary to pollinate all buds every generation, cannabis with seeds is for me a lot harder to sell, and the breeder doesn't even want to sell the bud because it possibly has some of his/her breeding stock in it. Should I mention taxes...

Long story short, nothing wrong with that $10, it's what you get for it that often ain't right.

/rant for now...

Yeah, I know what you mean. After buying this last bunch of seeds I decided I don't want to pay these absurd prices for seeds anymore. And that's exactly what made me want to chuck some pollen. Free seeds from two good strains. I'm excited to try it.

I guess people taking other people's hard work, crossing them and trying to take the credit for the resulting progeny is something that probably happens quite often. I can understand people's disrespect for that type of thing. But I think doing it strictly for home use - and giving credit where credit is due - will be a lot of fun, and very interesting/educational at the same time.

Call me a pollen chucker, it's more fun searching for your own phenos and I've seen more phenos in some commercial seeds than some of my chucked crosses. I recently ran 4x seeds of a commercial strain and got 3 completely different phenos. 4 of the 7 plants in this pic are DIY pollen chucks, shoot me...

That looks amazing! I'll be extremely happy if I can get anything even close to those results.

I used to be against pollen chucks. Then I thought to myself, growing is a means to and end, the end being getting medicated. If I grew some weed that somebody gave me 5 seeds for 20 bucks or even free and weren't as exactly described but still got me high I didn't complain. If those seeds turned out to be all female he or she did their job just fine as far as I'm concerned. So the next time you catch me spending $10-$20 or more a seed it will be because of amnesia.
