Feasible..sure...But its still an invasion of privacy and by there own laws illegal to look into your home if they ever got caught doing it the lawsuit would be more expensive then the flir technology only being used to locate people running from the cop's hell they use it to identify speeder's on the interstate's and call in ahead of time.
Only illegal to specifically "search" your home. If they find useful info while doing something else, say doing a "energy audit" of the neighborhood, they can act on it.

Except FLIR doesn't penetrate. Nor do infrared cameras. They RECEIVE light from the surface of the structure
Sorry for misspeaking once again. The camera system itself does not penetrate. What penetrates is the infrared radiation coming from the heat source. A better flir system will show you much better details in the heat pattern by detecting this radiation in much more detail, which is what gives you a much more detailed multicolored processed image, while a cheap flir is almost as worthless as infrared. I say this because if someone is using cheap flir or infrared to detect grow houses and stumbles upon a house were the heater is being used, stove being left on, or any other event that would build up heat, you could be confused as a grow house. Some use long wave, some use medium wave. As I said not all flir systems are built the same. If they were we all would be screwed by the flir Iphone case

Can anyone enlighten me on the other uses of checking out the heat source?

Can I use it to check if my girlfriend is hot and in the mood before I go over to her house?

All of the speculation on this thread seems to be around people that have entire rooms in their houses as grow areas. Now...I am planning to get a 3x3x7' Gorilla grow tent (which boasts IR shielding) with a MH/HPS 250-400watt grow light to grow about 5-6 plants a couple times a year.. Probably putting it in the corner of an outbuilding, and I am located about 15 miles from a major city. I can't see this thing giving off THAT much heat....but I don't know, and I can't exactly go to the cops and start asking them about it, telling them I am doing a research project or some shit.

Is all this helicopter/FLIR/surviellance stuff something I need to worry about? I have enough to lose that I would prefer to err on the side of caution....

I live in a city near a International Airport and very big Air Force base. Wanna get noided about hearing helicopters? I live near a hospital that has a air rescue. It's non stop air traffic. I run a 1000w hps. I have two rooms Veg/flower. I look at the sky a lot. Keeps me on my toes.
