Point me toward good PH and EC/TDS meters

I'm prepping my first hyrdo scene (after more than 15 years of growing, and at least 10 years of saying 'i'm going to try hydro next year...) and I need a good ph and ec/tds/ppm meter. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm considering a low end Oakton -- the ph-1 or ph-2 or a similar model from HM digital. I'm looking at the HM Com100 for my TDS meter.

Anyone have any experience with these meters? Anyone feel like I can get away with skimping on meters and going with the $20 'pen' type meters? Anyone convinced I'm doomed to fail unless I pony up the cash for Bluelab Truncheons?

Thanks much!

I dislike the Truncheons for my own use because they have that weird bar-graph readout. I like numbers. I have always gone with Oakton as the least expensive brand i'll trust. cn

I had Hannah, Milwakee both puked and had lack luster performance.

I bought a Blue Labs and it is the best hands down.
Hanna Meters are tricky I ran into a a major problem with my gro-check probe.. Basically my probe was dying out in less than a year I never let it get dry either I always get it in a clean cup of R/O water or distilled water. When I bought my 3rd probe I bought the Hanna storage solution and when I'm done doing readings I rinse and stick back into the storage solution and so far I'm almost at 2 years with no problems. I also noticed that my Hanna didnt like reading GH 1500 PPM. I cant diss the Hanna Grow Check just needs more attention than most. Blue Labs always has a solid reputation too just a word of helpful advice if you spend good money on a blue labs or Hanna Grow Check by their brand of solution because they are pretty expensive meters.

bluelab is quality. their truncheon (EC meter) doesnt need calibration, and it's got a 5 year warranty. cost like 105$ on ebay.

Or you can buy a cheapo meter, and have to replace them when they break, and constantly buy calibration solutions

bluelab ph here after trying out 2 crappy ebay units... killed my last crop cause i was trying to fix the ph when the damn pen was defective.

it was $100 at my local store and $30 for the cleaning/calibration kit. i store the pen in a crystal glass with ro water.

for ppm/ec i have a japanese unit i was given as a gift, luckily it reads numbers in the form of numbers not crazy characters...
