Please help! Soil/vertical lights or sog/flood tables?

Hi, i am posting this for a friend because I cannot give him sound enough advice for the setup, so if someone with experience could chime in and help, this would be greately apreciated.

He essentially has a 4.5'x7.5' room with about 7.5' headspace. Has all the controls, co2, (2) 400 hps sunsystemII cooltubes, (2) 600 hps sunsystemII cooltubes, (2) 250 mh agrosuns...

He initially wanted to do 8 huge plants, divided into two groups of 4, both groups having a 600 hps in vertical setup in the middle of each group and a 400 horizontal on the top. He was going to turn those every few days to get an even coverage, each of the plants would be in a 8 gallon smartpot.

Another idea he had was to do a flood and drain setup using the same lights but all in overhead horizontal position and instead do like 50 plants that would all be only a few feet tall when they finish up.

He essentially only has enough time for one grow and wanted to get the most from the setup, he thinks that he would get most from the sog because he thinks he can pull about 1 onion per plant, but I told him that if he does the vertical and bushes these trees out then he will probably get atleast 10 o per plant, the only drawback is that he may have to veg and flower longer the big plants, but I think the co2 will shorten some of that time.

So iguess the question is which setup will bring better returns, nevermind the extra time. He has DP blueberry and white widow. Thanks for your time in advance.
