Plants:Time:Yield

I was wondering how the yield of plants can do based on the time it takes to grow them and quantity of plants. So lets say you have 1 plants under a 600W HID setup. You will be able to grow it quite large, and largely produce a large yield from the plant. However, if you have 4 medium sized plants, you will be able to grow them in theory 1/4 the size each than the single plant, and also take less time to grow the plant, therefore, it sounds like it would be much more practical to grow more plants than less. But how do 16 plants in SOG 12/12 from seed stack up? Would each one still be able to produce 1/16 the yield of the larger plant, or not? Also, at what point does the time it takes stop changing to grow a smaller plant.
TL:DR what are the prime number of plants to grow to have more yield more often.
