Planting ungerminated seeds in soil?

After about 60 hours of trying the paper towel method, I decided to just plant the seed directly into the Fox Farm soil I have. I figured maybe there was a PH issue with the water and the soil may sort that out. Also, I was getting paranoid that because I kept having to unfold the paper towel over and over twice a day it could harm the seed.

I dampened the soil, put the seed in about 1/4 inch deep, lightly covered it with soil and put 57 watts of CFLs on it for warmth.

Does this seem like a good set up? I figure the way nature does it is probably the best thing for the seed anyways. I'm just a little anxious because it's the one seed I have and I don't want to mess it up.

Yea, that's how it works In nature so it indeed will work inside. Just keep an eye on it and maybe check on it in a few days if nothins going on. I usually throw a piece of cling wrap over the top of the cup (or pot, idk what your starting in) to help hold in heat and humidity, seems to improve germination rate, for me anyway. Also, if your having problems with the paper towel method, you could give the shot glass method a try

Well I guess I'll keep an eye on it. This way at least it won't need to be handled and checked on so much. I'll just know when I start to see it sprout.

Anyone know how long it takes for an ungerminated seed to begin to sprout through the surface?

Also, because it's under soil, the light won't harm it in any way will it? I'm just using the light right now to keep the soil warm.

I appreciate the advice. Do you know how long it should take for an ungerminated seed to sprout? I'm wondering when I should start worrying.

It can take anywhere between 24 hrs. to 10 days. Try putting the seed in a glass of water until it sinks, then place it in your soil.

Yeah, I would at this point. If you couldn't get it to germinate using the paper towel method, then definitely try placing it water until it sinks. Then place it back into your medium and keep it warm. But don't go over 85F. 78F is best.

I wouldn't f*ck with it unless a couple weeks of nothing happens. Whenever I pop seeds, its straight to soil. No scuffing, soaking, any of that.. give it time and quit checking on it every 10 mins

Could easily take 4 or 5 days for the seed to break through the soil. A healthy seed doesn't need anything expect moisture, warmth and darkness. The longer you keep a seed in paper towels or soaking in water the more likely it is to rot, not germinate.

Just don't let the soil dry out. Good luck with your seed but don't get your hopes up anything can happen to a single seedling.
