listen to what everyone is saying about prepping the soil! even just a little work will go a very long way come the end of summer.
if you're going to dig holes better get them dug soon, you want to give native roots time to die back, this will preserve your good dirt a little longer.
dig a good sized hole. these pics are about 2.5 feet across and about 2.5 deep, spaced about 4 feet apart. it's got a good 40 lb bag of composted cow manure in there (i like to get it out of the bag and turn it for several weeks before use), mixed with perlite, a little native soil and some lime.
loosen the dirt on the perimeter, maybe 3-4 feet out from the dig. roots will be about 6-10" deep here, picture a mirror image of the plant shape underground. breaking this perimeter soil not only kills/damages native roots, which helps keep nutes to your stuff, it will allow you to get lime and other amendments into the root zone quicker.
pay good attention to the native plants in your area too! you can see in the pic some red root pigweed, henbit, dead blackberry vines. those plants love acidic soil so i have to watch them and if they don't die back or stop doing so well i need more lime before my roots creep out of the "imported" soil mix and get stressed! i should get one of those fancy meter things i guess...
best of luck to you.
