top it twice...

After the first topping you should see two branches or nodes growing up towards the light, let them grow a bit then top each one, you will have 4 cola's after that

JOC - my problem with that is that most of it is too detailed for my still eeveloping understanding of growing since i am just a new grower

After the first topping let it recover, usually about a week then let it grow long enough for your second topping, let it recover again and then veg until you're ready to flower

not too hard. when a new node starts growing, pinch and remove.

it'll shock the plant, it'll stop growing, and where the single node was growing, two will start forming, and the main stem will divide into two.

then on those two 'substems' you wait until the second node, and top it again. it'll split the 'substems' into 'subsubstems'.

each time you do it it shocks the plant and delays your harvest time.

according to wikipedia:

Node (botany) - a place where the leaf is attached to the stem.

here's the link:

how's that for plain english???

true node?????
Wtf
Hey green... hope I can simplify for you to get the job done. Cotyledon is the term used for those first two tiny leaves that show when your seed sprouts. They don't have the serrated edges like the mature leaves will have. They usually shrink up and fall off when the plant is done with them. You just use those as a reference point on where to start counting nodes. (Nodes are the points where the leaves branch off from the stem.) When they say to count 'true nodes' they're talking about a multi bladed fan leaf as opposed to that 'baby leaf' cotyledon node. So...for 4 colas, you want to locate that pair of baby seed leaves at the lowest part of your stem. Then count the pair of leaves coming out right above those as your 1st 'true' node (we're talking the normal looking mj leaf here). Count the next pair or set of leaves above those as your 2nd node. You need to snip completely through the main stem just above where those 2nd pair of leaves come out. You can try to root the top that you've cut off, and if it takes, you'll end up with a clone of that plant. If it ends up a girl, then you just basically doubled your output from that single seed. My first grow ended up with 5 of 6 seeds being male, but since I topped, and then rooted those tops into clones, I still got 2 female plants! Topping like I described will make both the 1st and 2nd nodes send out new growth from right where each leaf and the main stem meet. This new growth will grow into a main shoot of its own...giving you 4 main stems - or colas - instead of just the one. Don't stress about hurting the plant. It will recover very quickly and show growth in a day or two! Good luck and happy growing. -Mandi

BTW: Using this method means you fuck with the plant just once - and you get your 4 colas - without carving her up and slowing her down on several different occaisions. It's Uncle Bens method, and it works great!!!
