I've heard of some people do this and saw it in a video once. basically you do your soil mix plant your cannabis then at the top leave space 1/2 a inch of space and fill up a layer of perlite. I just did this. does anyone know the benefits of this and pros and cons? any help or tips would be appreciated thanks

Didn´t I just read and reply to an identical thread somewhere else??
yes lol. i did this too and the layer of perlite of mine is yellowing, but u can look that up. i've not done so much reading on it thinking it shouldnt be so bad since i read a little thread on it but if you're worried of risks then i'd read up some

Some people say they do it for better drainage and others I've heard say it keeps the soil down or something. I personally think it is a waste of perlite and for me.. when I water I fill my conatiners to the lid with water/food, let it drain, and then repeat the same thing again. If I had perlite on top it would make my water style living hell lol

What risks do you think people might be worried about? Just don´t want to waste my time answering the same post over again.

It's for pest control but you need to put at least an inch over the top. Mainly gnats

Typically people put a layer of dolomite lime or sand for gnat control.
I put a layer on top of my soil for light reflectivity during the seedling/early veg stage.

Personally i think this encourages algae to grow.
every time i have perlite exposed it grows algae on it. It could jut be my climate.

It's used as a top layer of mulch how has nobody post this yet as it keeps moisture from dissipating faster from your soil top and less heat to your root system.
