Was thinking of making something similar to your setup.. what's the easiest way to power the heatsink fans?
hey man for that fixture i used the meanwell APV-12-5. it runs them at 5v. I did some research beforehand and was able to find the amps that those arctic alpines pull at 5v but i'd have to do some digging to find that info again. i do believe i remember that there's some room leftover for more fans but don't quote me on that. sorry for the semi vague answer but thats the driver. good luck

If you are running the Arctic Alpine 11 CPU coolers here are some numbers thanks to some of the testing done by SupraSPL
@ 4.91V draws 74mA, dissipates .363W (silent)

Let's round that up to 80mA for ease of calculations
8 x 80 = 640mA
So a 5V 700mA PSU or higher will suffice in your situation.

Something like THIS would work perfect (And it's OEM so efficiency & longevity should be better then using generic)

Right around 75mA @ 5V

Let me get this right, Your trying to cover a 4' x 12' space with only 600 watts?
4' x 12' = 48 sqft
48 x 30 w/sqft = 1440 watts

Did I miss something or am I interpreting what you said wrong?
No.
Im trying to deliver a certain PAR level to my canopy covering a 4' x 12'. Just trying to determine the proper spacing/number of COB's needed to get there.

I'm running 8 (4per fence rail) in an area 46x40". 800 w.
Nice.
After doing some testing I have decided to change the spacing of COB's closer than when previously posted. If running 90 degree reflectors, the spacing really needs to be 12" on center (or closer) between chips. This will help utilize the crossover pattern to gain intensity at depth and avoid "low intensity" spots in the canopy. On a 48" rail it's looking like 5 COB's is going to be the ticket...for my setup at least.

ok got ya what kind of PPFD you looking to achieve? I can maybe help out with some numbers as I have a spreadsheet to calculate PPFD and its surprisingly accurate

Not a bad choice but some 12V fans won't run off 5V.
1 of 10 of my Alpine11 fans spinned significantly slower from the beginning and finally didn't start rotating at all. Not sure if it happened because of the 5V or a faulty part. The aluminium heatsink is now running in passive mode with a V29 at 1050mA. Though it's getting quite hot, I think it will survive until proper maintanance (probably soldering in another fan, probably changing the RS-15-5 for RS-15-12) is possible. However, due to this experience I guess my next fixture won't feature Arctic CPU heatsinks.

I would suggest to not use the arctic passively. Very good chance to fry that poor vero.

Other option is to put more voltage to the fans and get that one to spin again. If it's trying at 5v...12v should get it spinning. At least till you get a new arctic. When you do, just swap the fan...no need to remount the cob.

My goal is to hit an average of 850-950 PAR at about 14" from the canopy for the entire grow area.
Thanks, but I'm logging everything with a PAR meter. No offense to any math wiz here, just trying to use real data to achieve my desired results. Under my 600W HPS my largest densest cola's grew under the "hot spot" of the reflector which receives about 1000 PAR @ 22". I would like to achieve this intensity everywhere in my grow to maximize potential yield.

Real data is always the best data. Just thought with the data I could provide it would accelerate your process of data collection by giving you an idea of what you would need to achieve your goal without going through as much trial and error to figure it out. Nothing beats real world data ever ;)

I posted my lights on page 4 of this thread and I would love to know how to use them better.

I have 4 cbx3070 ad 3000k cobs spaced out in a 38cm square. I have no lens on them and I would like to use it in a 80x80cm tent.

Have I spaced the cobs out correctly?
Where would be the best place for veg? Directly under one cob or between two (I grow two plants at a time)
What would be the best height to use these to achieve max results?
Would getting lens help for my space?

These cobs are great little technology, being a maker building it was easy .... being a bad gardener ... using it correctly .... well not so easy.

Yes, it's good spacing IMO.
As long as the tent is reflective I don't think using lenses will make a huge difference. That's the theory at least.
Anywhere in the tent should be good for veg. How low you can go with the lamps depends. If the emitters are 50 watts each, as high as 3 feet above canopy to as low as 12 inches or so for more intense coverage, or just 12 inches if you have dimming of some sort.

The "Return to Thunderdome" version... 585 true watts.

I have a couple of the Chinese cobs in my setup along side the veros. A couple of my 6500k bars with just two of the 50W China cobs are doing great. Low heat and the ladies love them. I mainly use 5000-6500k in veg. I've seen people using 4000k claiming success but all I noticed is painfully slow growth with that spectrum..

my cxa3070 cobs are 8 inches over my cola's, and the ones close are loving it, its been at that height for 2 weeks and the leaves are not burning, but the cola's closest to the cob measured at 8 inches, are building more bud and frost than the colas that are 10 or 12 inches, bear in mind I am using 2 cobs for this flower, I dont know if you were using cxb3070, but for sure the cxb3570 8 cree panels could not go that close, maybe someone else could chime in, but thats where my cxa's are

3x Vero 13 5000K Veg bar light, powered by APC35-350, 33 watts
1.813" Wide Extruded Aluminum Heatsink USA, 20 inches Passive cooled
Heatsink around 45-50C with no circulation. A little wider profile may have been better. 1/2 an inch gap between hot heatsink and power supply

COB 44% efficient, 4800 lumens, 10.87watt per cob (based on old Vero 13, COB efficiency Spreadsheets thread does not have Vero13 V2 info)
Power supply 84% efficient.
37% total efficiency (0.84*0.44)

@robincnn I like your lights. Do you use them for veg or flower? Do you have a journal I can look at?

You guys make me dream got a mars hydro 100x3w wanted a 60x5w but shit happens now i see i can diy a led light beating the shit out of led cie and for a reasonable price too bad i didn't tchek this thread before

I got a couple of question i have a 2x2 space i wanted to know wich and how many cob led should i take for my space im a little lost in the explanation if someone could help me or give a link to a thread a noob like me will understand thanks
