Phresh Filter Question

So my phresh filter 270 CFM came today and I was all excited to get installing it but I pulled it out of the box and expected a shrink wrapped or air tight sealant of some kind and instead got this:

Then I flip it over to inspect the bottom and see this:

Is this typical? That date is the manufactured date, right? Not the expiry? (I hope). But even if it is the mfr date, this bag is hardly sealed which means it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere for a year and half. I thought this was a top of the line brand?

FWIW, I did buy it on Amazon. This item to be specific:

Not sure why that would matter though since it came direct from Phresh.

What do you think is going to happen to the activated charcoal inside the filter which has been in a bag since that manufacture date? Just curious.

If its not been drawing stinky air through it ( which it hasn't) then its dandy.

I honestly don't know, which is why I'm asking. I bought a brand new product and expected it to be...well...new. Doesn't seem an unreasonable expectation.

does look odd, ive never bought the "phresh" brand usually buy can-lite filters they do come shrink wrapped everytime i think im on my 5th one. does it look used? anywho if its garbage in flower you'll know when you walk in the house.

Carbon has been in the ground a long time...It will be fine.
I have a Phresh and mine didn't come shrink wrapped and more importantly didn't have the pre- filter pre fitted. Was it a Phresh box?

Edit: if it came direct then just use it...

That is the Phresh 270 CFM INTAKE filter? Not sure how you intend to use it but it is designed to filter incoming air not for odor control. If you want odor control you need to buy the inline Phresh filters.

I repeat. The PHresh INTAKE filters do not control odor! For odor control use their inline filters. They make a good filter.

I got a new 6 x 12 phresh filter that was still in the box so I just took a few pics.
I think you will feel better when you see the date on my last picture.

i haven't read the whole thread....you are aware that that is an intake filter? not an exhaust filter? 2 different units, with very different prices....and uses?

now i have read the thread...those are both intake filters, designed to keep dust and bugs out of your grow room, not exhaust filters, designed to remove odors from your exhaust....they won't remove odor, or at least not anywhere close to enough...they will make your exhaust nice and particulate clean, but it will still stink like skunks fucking a wheel of old cheese

I'll have to do some homework and make some changes.
My original one is bigger. Not sure if the original is an intake filter or not. Hope not.
Going to look into it.
Here is the other one I have that is bigger, hope it's not an intake filter lol.

that looks like an exhaust filter. the easiest way to tell is weight...the intake filters don't have very much carbon in them, the exhaust filters weigh a lot more, like ten times as much....

You can tell the difference by the weight. Odor control filters are heavier due to the amount of carbon in them compared to the intake filters.

The one I just opened is thinner and weighs much less than the old one.
Going to send it back and get the correct unit.

This was great. I posted with the intent to help a grower and I was helped in a big way.

Oh wow, super rookie mistake. Thank you for pointing this out! I'm glad I have an intake filter now, though as I'd planned on getting one eventually any way; just gotta order an exhaust heh...good thing the girls aren't super stinky yet. This site is the best. Thanks all.
