Soil ph 6.4 - 7.0
hydro ph 5.5 - 6.0
I use ph down all the time, i mix up 5 gallons nute mix at a time so it usually takes me 3 caps full to bring it down .5, so put some in then test the water until you reached the ph you want, be careful when i used it on less than a gallon i used a couple drop and the ph went to far

Depending on specific growing methods and circumstances you could probably get away with not using any pH-Down. An over-whelming majority of liquid fertilizers and supplements are acidic and will therefore lower the pH of the solution to some extent. Make sure you check the pH of the solution after fertilizer has been added.

If you're growing in soil/super-soil and planned on giving plain water, you might consider adding a tablespoon or less of unsulphured blackstrap molasses. It is acidic, provides carbohydrates to microbes and contains potassium with trace minerals. If you fool around with it you should be able to determine how much molasses you need to bring the pH down to 6.5 ish.
