Personal Coco Grow, some questions.

Hello RIU.

So currently going to be running a personal coco grow ( first coco).
I have run outdoor, soil, dwc and aero, but I am going to be testing out Coco.

Here is my setup I'll be running.

3x3 Grow Tent.
Mars Pro Cree 256
- New Mars light with Cree LED. Never been a fan of Mars up until now with the new Cree line.
4 x 5 Gallon Smart Pots
Coco Coir Medium
Strains
Blue Dream
Viper Cookies
Pineapple Chunk
Cotton Candy

Carbon filter
Active Air Vortex Fan
C02
circulation fan
SCROG Net.

Nutrients:
I have heard great things about Botanicare CNS 17 as a great nute for Coco. ANy input?
Seen some people use only the grow and some both grow and bloom?
Also hear flora Nova Bloom part of the KISS works well.
Any input on nutes would be great.
I general use BPN but I am currently starting to go towards 1 or 2 part nutes.

Any help with a few of the questions I am having would be great.

This is personal and is not meant for massive yields, but highest quality is my top priority.

Veg will be 30 Days or about 2 foot tall and Bloom will depend obviously on trics.

Thanks RIU members in advance.

Peace, Trippy.

Hey trippy,

One of my 10x10 rooms is in coco, I can share what I have used and noticed. I started with the botanicare line in the room, but moved away to a GH line 3part. (Just a personal preference, I have friends who still use Botanicare and 2-parts, and love it). Any line of nutes from a trusted brand should be fine, everyone has their preference. What I wish someone would have told me when I first started using coco was that you have to use much more cal/mag. I would start with the actual recommended amount on the bottle once they start showing signs of deficiency. Don't be afraid to go over the rec dose, because coco doesn't have any nutrients in it, zero! You will also be giving nutrients to your plant sooner than you would soil, so don't feel like you're doing something wrong. Make sure you properly pre-soak your coco if you need too. I also use a 80/20 coco/perlite combo. It helps the coco from clumping.

Hey mate.
Appriciate it.
I use EC rather than liquid measurements to be more accurate.
Also have read alot on Coco and will be presoaking no doubt with Cal Mag.
The thing about the CNS line was that its designed for Coco with the high Cal Mag in it.
Just trying to reduce my line from the many bottles I have now.
I have used GH 3 part before when I was starting out and then switched to BPN which I do like ut just so many bottles that are unneeded.

Will be going with one of the 3 above.
Also will be going with LED, if I was going for a commercial space I would for sure be using DE.

Thanks for the insight on Coco.

How is your comparison to soil with Coco or hydro?
This is personal so max yield is not my goal but quality as usual.
What didnt you like about CNS as apposed to GH?

EC! :hump: Good man! I know about the CNS line. IMO I like to keep more control over what goes in my plants, not just pre-made from the manufacturer; again just preference. IMO I feel that coco is easier to control over most soils as most soils are loaded with nutrients from the manufacturer. Fox Farms Ocean Forest for instance has a higher amount of nitrogen, so you don't need to feed it as quickly. I like knowing, ok, there isn't shit in this medium, let's give her what she needs! I haven't done much testing with LED's, but I would love too. I have done my research on them and feel that the technology is there, if not, very close to competing with an HPS. I feel that coco is a great medium and you will see somewhat similar speed in growth like hydro, and good flavor. I have always had a more organic taste with soil, obviously! but after going with coco a few years back, I made a whole room dedicated to it. I only grow a few soil here and there. I tend to keep soil outdoors now!

Yes EC mate. I have grown hydro for quite a while and wanted to make a personal switch.
As for LED its all about the spectrum, PAR and what LED's are being used.
CREE LED's are the best there are.
Mars hydro just came out with a Cree and its amazing.
LED is for sure surpassing HPS but the price point is still too high. DE is where its at commercially due to penetration.
I prefer hydro so I know what is there already. Not a fan of soil really.
Have experimented with a few lines and BPN has given me the best results.
Want to do some research on these three and waiting on some others to chime in on theyre experiance.
Thanks for the suggestions though as have never done Coco.

Just don't feed them too often when they're small cause the roots will take forever to fill up the medium if you do. But once the roots fill up the medium and they take off, you can really start pounding them with feedings. (You can over water when they are still small, but once they grow up, it is very hard to overwater)
I use H&G coco nutrients with no added calmag, never had a problem with calcium or magnesium.

Yeah, but thats just like in soil. Overwatering when young can be very bad.
Appriciate the advice on H&G will look into them as well.

Well, the part where you can feed them every day isn't just like in soil. I guess I can't really say cause I've only ever done soil outdoors. But don't you let it dry out a bit in soil? And you feed with every watering

I don't do soil anymore. I generally do hydro and moving to coco for personal.
Yes you dry out soil.
Anyways, Ill checkout the line you suggested and do some research and compare.

I use house and garden in coco as well. I am running flood and drain. Not a single deficiency in the room.

Pictures are in my grow journal here: https://www.rollitup.org/Journal/jkwrestling13.895121/

They are currently rounding out week 6 of flower.

Coco is best watered everyday. All of the tips of my leaves are yellowed the perfect amount, feeding at H&G feed schedule recommended full strength. However, if you do use the shooting powder or top shooter I would recommend running it at half strength, however if you're going for quantity not quality, I dont see why you would even use it.

I'll gladly have a look at your grow for sure.
I 'am not going for amount. Sure having a descent yield is great, but quality is what I am after.
I have read alot about Coco. I also use EC rather than the directions.
Do you find that Coco requires a higher EC?

I never really use my tds meter anymore, I did happen to check it for the first time in years the other day though. I wanna say it was 900 week 5 of flower.
I use top booster and shooting powder at full strength usually, but I could see some strains not responding well.

with nutes I use a 1 part grow and bloom they say on the bottle that its good for hydro, coco and soil. and I have found this to be true, but I use to use tap water but I now have a good supply of rain water but with rain water I have to feed cal/mag every time, with tap only now and again. so I would get some cal/mag just to be on the safe side, I also don't feed seedling's for the first two weeks only wet them and I don't let my ph go under 5.8 or over 6.0 I feed everyday from two weeks old. best of luck I love coco it's nice and easy and the best of both worlds.

Yeah mate Im not a newbie grower, just new to Coco.
Got lots of Cal Mag and PH down and up.
Just want the simplest nutrient regiment for very high quality.
Seems Ill be taking a look at H&G as my main right now after I do some research.
You feeding once a day or twice?

majorbudz

just once per day I find that's enough I like to keep it easy and simple as I can that's why I like coco so much.

My main reason for Coco is because I live in an area where in the Winter we get some serious storms and cannot risk root rot in DWC and still want the control of hydro.
Thanks mate have been helpful.
WIll do my research on this nutrient.
Ill report back when I have finally come to a final conculsion on what nutrient wether it be a 1 part 2 part or 3 part.
