happened to me too several times since i figured that you hardly will be able to by in store. since i order my supplies online at the odds stores:D
perlite is volcanic rock pellets, kind of grounded up rock;) now this stuff is use to isolate ceilings and crawl spaces, BUT the material use for these tasked may be treated with some chemical compound for whatever reason, so check before buying;)

Then the person was a moron, or the garden center sucks, take your pick. Try going back and talking with someone else, if they still don't know what your talking about just buy it online, it's very light weight so it's not too expensive to ship and you usually don't need a lot of it. Oh and don't get the shultz brand, it's not sorted or sifted so a lot of it is like sand and can cause more issues then solutions... plus they over-charge for it. Hope that helps.

you can also use expanded clay pellets which you can buy at almost every garden center, so this may be more convenient for you. the stuff comes in different pellets sizes, the larger the volume gets the cheaper it is normally;)

i live in the UK, i managed to find some in my local garden centre, its not that popular for general growing purposes, but used alot in orchid growing, so if they have a section for orchids, try there
