Years ago, I played violin at a large, popular gospel church on Chicago's south side. They broadcasted the Sunday services via a local radio station. The pastors were very talented, and the music rocked (if I do say so myself). Each service brought in over $2k in collections, and they had 3 services per week. These ministers all drove BMWs or above, and their clothes were killer. After being there about a month, they discovered my atheism via casual conversation. After that, they let their hair down. They were all atheist, even those energetic pastors. They often poked fun at their parishioners, which I didn't understand. Although I liked a few of them, they were scumbags.
It seems that there are many religious professionals that are atheist. The Clergy Project is one organization that supports such people. I find this to be and interesting phenomena...
