Over-fert hydro-please help!

(thanx 'xbravoz'---GREAT site), which is where I borrowed the attatched 2 pictures, as they exhibit the exact same symptoms of my plants.

I found these 2 pictures underneath "Fertilizer Burn" on the ganjaguerrilla site. Interestingly enough, the caption under one said 'Nitrogen Toxicity' but when saving it found it alluded to a lack of light as well. Anyone have any comment on that?The other was just captioned 'Droopy' but I'm assuming they both are sypmtoms of over-fertilization. My actual plants don't look quite this bad (see above link) , but similar...and who knows(?), with time.....

Here's my question (love links if you got'm)---- what's the best way, in a hydroponic system, to flush the plants? And, is this ABSOLUTELY necessary? (or could I just dilute the present mix, as well as saturate the leaves by foliar spraying) Actually, that's two questions........or three.......

Wow.....not one reply? Nobody has any advice about the best way to flush over-fertilized hydro system?

If you want to fix your problem. this is what you will need..

PPM meter..

pH test kit.

FLUSH YOUR RES AND REFILL. If your using Tap water... use 1/2 dosage of nutes. try to get a PPM of 600 right now... and raise it every week buy 50ppm or 100ppm...

If you do this.. your plants will get saved..

Most important PH your water ....

If your water is getting warm inside the res.. you need to vent it out... o

np man...im almost 99% sure if you follow these directions.. your plants will heal and show results in 2-4 hours... (experienced the same shit)


PS... Add air stones to your water res... if your growing aero or bubbler or somthing... if your roots are submerged in water.. you need air in that water... get like 2-3 with a air pump this will also show big results.

Just to add to what blonddie07 posted, warm water will also have far less oxygene in it, leaving yaself wide open to pythium type attacks, possibly causing root rots, caution m8 Ya want ya res to be around the 21oC mark, hope this helps.

fish aquarium pump is perfect it jus keeeps air in the water to stop it goin stagnate

You should use a something to leech the salt out like clearex. Clearex will get rid of all the salts that have been building up in your grow medium. Its like $10 for a bottle just mix some clearex with R/O water and flush them out and dont feed them for a day or two.

It's definitely due to a low (acidic) pH, looks a lot like yours blonddie07, but instead of lack of oxygen (I have 5' bubblers in all the buckets), I believe it was due to a failure to circulate the water, leading to a toxic brew.

At least, that's what I'm guessing.....so many similar symptoms can have a variety of causes, but the underlying theme is bad pH.

I (foolishly) followed advice from a fellow DWC op setup description that said pH won't be a problem if you keep the fert well-mixed and light. I did, but after 5 or 6 weeks sitting in basically the same water (I just kept topping off), they definitely weren't looking to good.

I've since given them a clean flush, but haven't seen the results yet. (It's dark time.) More than a little worried as it's winter here, and I the water was REALLY cold. Have since purchased a heating mat.

I'll let you know the results!

Note to self: The importance of pH can't be over-stressed.

I've ordered a pH / ECC meter on e-bay....otherwise, I'd tell you what the pH was.....

Got plenty of bubblers, and if anything the water is WAY to cold.......what kind of problems would that cause?

i actually think your problem is root rot from too much water, not enough air. ive had similar problems. now i make sure the roots have six inches of air from netpot to water. the pot stays dry and the plant gets what it needs. Check your roots. are they brown? If so, foliar feed them, cut your roots off, keep the water level relatively high, but next time when the roots drop (cutting the roots will tell the plant to go into overdrive) drop the water level with the roots so they have some air between the pot and water. Also, get a humidifier or two temporarily. they are drooping because the plant cant take up water, for one reason or another. its not nutes though. good luck!

I agree with you that it may be an uptake problem of some kind, but I doubt it's root rot----the roots are truly admirable, white and thick. I wish the plants looked as good as the roots did! By the way, are you running a DWC as well? I thought maybe they weren't getting enough O2 because they were so thick, so I added and extra bubbler/air stone to the one that looked the sickest....it still looks the thickest.

Frustratingly, it could be a host of things....I'll know the pH this week when my Champs pH/EC meter arrives. But also, I think they might they might not be getting enough light, I have an old 400 watt HPS for 5 big plants.....so gotta take care of that as well..........

Hmmmm....this is becoming somewhat familiar to work! But it's a labor of love....
