Outdoor Plant Issues

Hi there,

I have a few outdoor plants going this year and have an issue I'd like to share to see if anyone has any input.

They have kinda skinny and stringy new growth, everything else looks pretty good. Could be greener in my opinion.

I've been growing for several years now and this is a common problem ever since I went organic.

The plants are in 100-150 gallon smart pots filled with a homemade soil mix comprised of a premade balanced fertilizer and a few extra goodies I threw in there.

I use auto irrigation in combination with hand watering and I feed compost/nutrient tea by hand every 2-4 waterings, sometimes not quite as often.

It's been pretty hot and dry here in Oregon this year.

I just cropped some indoor with the same soil mix and compost tea and it went did great, but I did see the same tacoing and thin new growth.

These outdoor plants are growing super fast and are drinking 10-20 gallons of water per watering.

If anyone has any experience with this issue and would like to share that would be awesome.

Thanks.

I pictured the plant, the new stringy growth, and huge healthy bottom growth fan leaf.

Hello,

If I were in your shoes and positive it wasn't the sign of continuously soggy roots, since they'd been getting watered everyday, then I might consider some rich organic matter as a top dressing to be honest.
I'd probably go with some blood and bone meal + a mulching myself. That's if the soil was plenty rich already, otherwise it would be cow or composted chicken manure + lime and a mulching instead.

If you could please recall the amendments you regularly add to your soil and compost tea, it will help people a lot.

Otherwise i'd probably put the wilt down to the heat and low humidity, if it wasn't wilted throughout the whole day. I think it would be worth skipping one day's water, just in case it's soggy roots. I have hot summers too and I honestly think they do a bit better with a days break in my case.
I'm generally not a bug person, though it might be worth scoping the plant just in case.

About all i have i think.
Good luck and hope it helps.

I used an all purpose organic fert mix + neem meal + kelp + crab meal + lime and a dirt huggers compost. I think you may be right, i didn't water today and plants look a little less stressed.

It only wilts towards the end of the day and is perky all day before that. I'm thinking water every 2-3 days .
