Looking good. Those crosses sound fire. How far into flower do you hit them with the pollen? I've dusted my BST2's in the FP patch three times this past two weeks. But there was rain right after the first two. I did see a few seeds starting to form on one of them, so I held off on her this last time. They are 2-3 weeks into flower. The young BST1 is just starting, so she hasn't got any yet. Well, other than natural pollination. The male is about ten feet tall and eight foot wide. I dusted it up pretty good when I was cutting shoots off.

My second try a manual pollination - the first time was a kiwi, it didn't take. They are a good two weeks into flowering. The pistils are nice and white and sticky; my camping post on the previous page has the most recent flower pics

Yea, two weeks is what I have heard. Your flowers look a little ahead of mine. I may be counting from when I saw hairs. {I really don't remember just when that was and need to look back on my thread}

I'll be sawing the BST2 male down next time I'm down there. The Sidetracked: males are just now showing their balls, so I have to keep a close eye on them the next couple of weeks. Having 4 to choose from is great. Last year I had to stress some of the plants to make them flip to male. I got 3 to go over, {2 of which I used} but I hated to have to do it that way. Seeds are my main goal right now, so I'll hit most of the good girls pretty heavy. I'm just growing for smoke, and I don't smoke that much.

I still have two branches left; planning on doing a little more dusting in a couple of more days. When I excised Mr. Kong, I left one branch (arm? trunk? terminal growth?) standing. I got a call from my wife later that day: "I think I made a mistake, I cut down that last one." She was an indoor grower, always on the look our for hermies. All's well that ends with me getting some seeds outta the deal.

How do you apply the pollen Larry? I used a very soft, artists brush. Are there indicators that pollination has been successful?

I've put it in a zip lock bag then dunk a section into the bag mix it around a bit and I've also learned that if you spray the rest of the plant down with water after it kills the pollen you don't want

I have one male outside 80 ft from my other budding plants in a greenhouse,will this produce unwanted pollination?Trying to hit a few buds without seeding the whole place.

I use paper bags {the thick ones you see on the ice cream isle} and push as much of the branch into the bag as will fit, then tap the bag to stir up the pollen when I just doing one branch. But for same patch, whole plant pollination, I cut a few shoots off the male, then shake them over the buds. I try to leave the top 1/4 of the plant pollen free.

I didn't see the 2nd part of your question before I had posted. A couple three days after you hit it with the pollen some of the white hairs will turn brown if it takes. Here is a pretty good thread on the subject.

Most likely you will have no problems at all. But I would harvest the pollen as soon as you can, just to be on the safe side. You can cut the shoots off right before the sacks open, then put them in a glass of water and catch the pollen on a cookie sheet or the like. But there can be no fan or breeze.

The pollen is pretty easy to see and there will be lots of it!

To spray or not to spray...

This is my second year with an outdoor on my own. Last year, we had one plant that we did not cover or spray and it produced beautifully and had no mold/mildew issues, and ones I sprayed religiously ended out having all kinds of issues. I realize that this is about 99% to do with genetics. But, with how much rain we had, the first spray I did this year was washed off, and I only got one more in since that might have "stuck". Last year I sprayed various mixes every other week from the time they were 2' tall until they began to bud.

Since that last spray I've seen worms, PM, and some other bug/egg thing I've never seen before. I've had way more bug issues this year than last. Of all the philosophies I've read on when to spray and when to stop, I've adopted the schedule that from the day I see baby buds forming I stop spraying. This year, I'm questioning that. I'm wondering if even though I have very small buds forming, I shouldn't hit them one more time with a Neem/Pro-tekt/GreenCure/Soap mix. I'm not sure how much of that residue would still be on the plant come harvest... I'm not even sure its worth doing at this point.

Any thoughts?

I would spray it in the first few weeks of budding your most likely to get a bit of rain before they start to stack.

Holy poop, the recent posts here just became relevant for me. I'm going to have my first opportunity to try some controlled pollinating. This is the second year I've given my brother my extra plants, and it turns out that he hasn't been paying attention and the LSD is a boy. I am so psyched! I had one here but I killed it before it matured so it wouldn't pollinate the 9 girls.

He has a BB#3, a Rugdawg, and Sour Diesel, and we're going to let them all pollinate (well, they might have already....). I'm also going to grab some pollen and try to do some limited pollinating here at my house -- specifically the Mystery plant we love so much with this LSD -- both are disease resistant plants that finish early!!!

Hopefully the timing will be good. I'm still reading up on what I need to do, but I'm going cross-county tomorrow to pic up some pollen (he lives about 90 minutes away).

Well, I don't know that I'm the one to chime in regarding spraying, but hey, here's my 2 cents... What I've read and consensus seems to indicate, it's ok into the first few weeks of flower. The million $$ question: have you reached/past that point? My bag lady is starting to fill in nicely, and CBC ain't far behind. Are they two or three weeks into flower? #hellifIknow. And I totally get you have different pressures HR - especially in that you are growing medicine for folks! Maybe do another experiment: divide the plants longitudinally, spray half and compare notes at the end?

I kind of like the idea of spraying half the plant, I might just hit the north sides, since its more likely to get PM anyway. Honestly, I haven't been keeping track of when they showed the first sign of flowering, there are 5 strains that are on slightly different schedules. I think I'm about a week behind everyone else though (or maybe we judge the start of flowering differently?).

My brother and I exchanged more pictures, and the boy might not be ready yet, so I doubt I'll drive out there today. He's going away for a week, I have no idea if by the time he gets back it will be too late -- how long would you say the window is to collect pollen?

And thanks for the good wishes, luckily I have nothing riding on it, it would just be really fun (and economical!) if I could come away with some quality seeds.

I can get over there while he's away... do you (all) think there will still be pollen in a week? I have no experience with this, I've always chopped them before they matured.

The flowers open faster than I would have guessed. They start from the bottom of the cluster (?) and open their way up the stalk. When I cut my tops, only the most bottom flowers were open < 10. Within two days I was at where the pic was taken: lots of pollen... and the wind at your brother's is going to be doing its work. I think the more important concern is you want enough time for the seeds to mature before you are cutting down Momma

I'm realizing that I have a lot to learn, this is more subtle and time-sensitive than I had realized. There are some decent tutorials, I'll read/watch them through. It's funny how you don't know how much there is to know until you start to find out what you didn't know... lol

How much time does it take for seeds to mature? Longer than for flowers, it sounds like? I'm also wondering if it matters if the plant gets PM while the seeds are maturing... in other words, I can let them go as long as I need to but the plant will eventually be overtaken with PM. Can I wash the seeds before I air dry them?
