The heat has done it's job. My morning soil temps are 10 degrees higher than they were last week. The roots are growing and it is full speed ahead.

Where I grew up in the Northeast, this would be totally normal, when the wind changed direction the weather could change also, often dramatically. This weather doesn't seem normal to me for Oregon, although I'm a fairly recent transplant, only been here 12 years. I took some classes in system sciences aimed at describing the interrelated systems that support life in the biosphere. According to that information, what was once strange is now to be expected. (no intention of starting a climate change debate, just saying the weather sure is odd...)

I just spent 5 years in New Jersey and I've got to say the weather this last year since we moved back has been closer to the NE than I remember Oregon being. I'm used to 5 weeks between 60 and 90.

I still haven't figured out exactly how I messed up two of my plants, they are very pale (one has a completely purple stem system, ground to leaves). I tried to get the soil going in advance, and I added time release nutes and mycorrhizae, and grew some red clover in it (I believe they are "nitrogen fixers"). My suspicion is that I was adding dolomite lime to my SIPs -- which for reasons I don't fully understand is important and works in that system -- and I may have added it to this soil raising the pH in these pots too high. I've been adding coffee grounds, but no change yet. Any ideas?
I've posted pics of the girls in the garden, but realized I keep forgetting these two because they are on the other side. The red pot has the bottom removed, so these are the only ones we have this year that are "in the ground", or at least have access to it. We had to put them in the pot because the garden grew so tall in the warm early spring that they would have been too short to reach light.
And lastly, just for fun, butterfly season has started.

Good morning folks. It was a busy weekend in the garden: transplanted tomatoes,the last of the peppers, some more basil and a couple of Dahlias I started from seed. Planted a bunch of seeds. Harvested some more garlic and some of the onions, strawberries and raspberries. The Marion berries are just starting now. We weeded (never ending) and mowed. Had to get a bunch of stuff done before the crap weather moves in...
The girls are looking good and on a happy note: the Strawberry hybrid is putting on new vegetative growth. She's definitely looking fuller that last week - looking at the plant I'm not seeing buds like I was before.
How this will all turn out? She is going to my pruning experiment: LST and I am going to pinch some buds, inspired by Larry's mid-season smokesuggestion. What I really need to do is build support for them, 'specially the two in the grow bags. My big girls!
Your gardens are looking good, HR! I'm sorry, I don't have much for you question. I would say (semi-confidently) the purple is genetics... @Dr.D81 have you seen that much purple, this early, before? The light green plant - guessing that if you're not seeing leaf curl, burnt tips, streaking, etc. it should be ok? Famous last words. If she is growing, and looks healthy in all other aspects... Was she darker earlier and has lightened?

@WV: Jetson -- your garden is looking great! Thanks for trying to diagnose my plant issues... it's tough to convey all the details keep it a 'short story'. Since the two pots with pale plants (two different strains) have a unique soil mix/method, that's definitely where the problem originates. I just need to figure out if my soil is too high or too low in something, and what that something is. Or not. In a yard full of experiments, some won't make it. I'm really curious how they'll look after a week of solid sun, and that should be next week, I hope.

WV, I just this year heard of topping the peppers to get bushier plants. Anyway I did it and they are starting to branch out nicely. Pretty dense of me not to think of this before.

Yea that one is the bck has blueberry haze in it amd is supposed to look like that. If you notice it is the only one yellowy with purple stems. This was the mom and you can see how purple its stems were

Update from my garden. So nice to see how others in the state are doing.

So far, so good. The soil is pretty much your basic organic garden. Lots of compost and some soil amendments including oyster shell powder, along with a commercially pre-mixed amendment containing stuff like feather and cottonseed meal. The plants aren't anything like some of our other posters on this thread but for first time grow, I'm happy.
Pre-flowers are starting to form. I'm pretty sure one of the plants is a girl. I haven't seen anything definitively male yet but am on the look out. Any advice or helpful images to help guide me in sexing the younguns will be 'preciated.

They look great to me! I'm really looking forward to living vicariously and watching all of the plants that were put right into the ground take off into trees. I'm psyched for my micro-garden, but I do like to see the trees grow. It's kind of like having a neighbor with a Great Dane or a Mastiff -- I don't want one, but they are awesome to look at.
As far as sexing goes, I'm no expert but I think its kind of early for them to be showing? Last year mine didn't show until the first week of August.

First year grower here. I read that pre-flowers start to show at the base of branches after 8 weeks but I only know what I read. I got a loupe out and sure enough there are teensy little buds there and one had what matched the photos as a female with one thin stigma snaking out. The others, not. It could be all a snipe hunt though. I'm going to reduce my garden to 4 plants when they are sexed but not until I'm sure!They look great to me! "Last years" that I referred to, that was my first grow, so I'm just one up on you. From what I recall, when the boys show it takes some time to develop to the point of being able to pollinate, so if you are checking them daily you'll have plenty of time to remove the plants before they're fully formed. For what its worth, I'd definitely let them go until you are 100% sure.

Thanks for digging up that link, Fogdog. That's an informative post. I like the idea of light dep on just one branch. Very clever. In this thread we are on, post #41 shows young male flowers, and #43 a female, up on the top near where she was pinched. I have to enlarge the pic: old eyes.
One comment on your garden: are you planning on covering the weed barrier with a mulch? Black fabric uncovered like that is going to bake the ground (and roots) beneath it.
I got the support structure built and netting put up. C. commented that we should have netted before the plants were this tall. It wasn't that bad. I'm still a little unsure about any training (inexperience) I may try.
The structure for me is support from the wind and support for the big bad buds that are a coming! We have been having some whipping afternoon winds, my mantra for the drive home has been: no broken branches - no wind damage, no broken branches - no wind damage. My honorary HR experiment is no structure for the other two; though I have done a little twine binding between the post pinch growth.

It's funny, just a couple of posts ago I was saying how I'm happy to have most of my plants in pots and not in the ground... And now I just put three in the ground. I got a bad batch of soil, and the three I had in my biggest pots (15gallon, non-SIP) were in that soil and are not doing well and everything I've tried is failing to correct their issues. So, rather than get a bigger pot, I just put them in the ground.
Last year the ones I had in the ground were either in a very large hole or 100 gallon cloth pots, both were filled with mostly FFOF and other quality soil and amendments. They got huge. This year I'd say the holes these poor girls went into would hold about 25-30 gallons. They got a bag of steer manure/compost mixed with the local soil and some Dr. Earth potting soil (both from Home Depot) with some dry time-release nutes mixed in. It's all a big experiment. First they have to recover from whatever ails them, then they have to figure out that their roots no longer have boundaries. These three are from seed, I really hope they bounce back.
I wonder if they'll outgrow the ones in SIPs... the pic is two LSD -- one that's been healthy from day one in a SIP, and one that started life in bad soil and just went into the ground today
