optimizing flavor/taste

My first grow was last year, grew 5 different Greenpoint strains and everything went very well (outdoors in the ground with organic methods).

I removed fan leaves and rinsed the buds gently right after harvest, then hung to dry in a shed, followed about 10 days later with trimming and cure in mason jars. Monitored humidity in jars, aimed for under 70% initially (if it was over I removed the buds to dry a bit more in a paper bag). Burped jars daily for a week or so then gradually tapered off. Most jars seemed to settle around 55-65% r.h. after a few months.

Terps are strong, buds look nice. Nothing is what I'd call "super sticky" but a leave a nice residue on your fingers and feel soft when squeezed.

But I'd say flavor is not A1 when smoked (much nicer when vaped). In fact it seems a little bit harsh. I've noticed this sometimes with other local outdoor-grown bud.

When finishing a bowl there usually is just a little light-colored ash left.

What's the secret to that really delicious tasting bud? I want to understand what part of my process I need to adjust.

One theory I'm considering--like many noobs I may have been too heavy handed when feeding. Not sure that's a huge issue with organics, since the soil microbes have to break the stuff down before the plant can take it up, but thinking maybe I go lighter this year and stop altogether when flower begins (did a soil test in February, have lots of P in the soil, mainly because I mixed in composted cow manure AND topdressed with fish bone meal right before flowering began).

Outdoor weed can get contaminated with dust, pollen, all sorts of things. Many people wash their buds after harvest and I've seen photos of the wash water that was a dirty brown. I don't know if that is the cause of your harsh taste but something to think about.

Overfeeding can definitely impact the quality of the finished product.

As I mentioned in my original post, all the bud was carefully rinsed. Wouldn't say the water looked very dirty afterward, but I doubt there were any residues left on the buds after washing.

Since these plants are organically grown in the ground, not sure it's really possible to "flush" out the nutrients. I could go much lighter on feeding though and skip feeding altogether during flower (since in my case I know the soil has plenty of P). Maybe some extra watering in the second half of flower?

Skipping feeding entirely in flower is going to be a recipe for disaster.

I missed that. I must look like an ass now. Oh well. Happens all the time.

If you grew and cured it correctly then all you can do is switch strains for a different terpene profile right?

Not as long as the soil contains all the nutrients the plant needs--big difference using organic methods. Last year I topdressed with fish bone meal at the beginning of flower, which ended up being way overkill on the P. I also did a few compost teas. Thinking maybe I overdid it...

Wash it well.

The other large factor in taste is temps. Outdoors you can't control the temperature. Terps get evaporated at too high of a temperature

Plenty of experienced smokers with appreciation for flavor have said outdoor can taste great. You really believe ALL cannabis grown in the sun and fresh air is inferior?
I have grown a few semi's full so my choice to go indoors was cause I couldn't get the overall bag appeal I wanted from outdoor

Maybe....I grew 5 different strains but since they were Greenpoint they all had those Stardawg genetics (except the Cherry Wine). From what I read online some of those strains can come out pretty flavorful. Maybe I didn't have the right phenotype?

The terps are pronounced--and you can definitely taste them, especially on the first hit. Just doesn't have that perfect buttery smooth flavor--it's a little bit harsh.

I think I got it pretty clean--actually I think it was pretty clean to begin with, judging by how little dirt I saw in the used water.

We had some heat but as I said the terps are pretty nice. Although interestingly they seemed strongest at about week 7 or 8 of flower and then eased up some before harvest, although that could be because the air was cooler and drier in October...

Some of the best cannabis I ever tasted was outdoor grown. Back in the late seventies and early 80's when we started to get the outdoor Humboldt County weed. And that's what we called it. Humboldt County or just Skunk Bud. They sell Skunk strains today and I've grown a few but nothing today is anything like it. But yeah, that was all outdoor grown and it was some of the best tasting weed. One gram would stink up your car and back then it was illegal so weed carry it around in Mason jars in the trunk of our cars. Good times.

So what do you suppose is the secret? I remember coming across some amazing-tasting bud back in the eighties and nineties, no idea if it was outdoor or indoor, but it just had this amazing smell and smoked very smooth. Seemed like you tasted terps and not much else. Was hoping I'd be able to achieve those results growing outdoor here but last year's harvest doesn't quite get there.

I kinda think a lot of it is getting old and senses dulling.

Like how all these 60-70 year olds get lasik and trip out on how bright colors are.
