One year old buds turned brown.

Hello,

The buds pictured below are from last year's harvest. This year's harvest, being light, I don't want to toss them. Has anybody experienced this? The camera lighting isn't depicting them exactly but they are golden brown. The trichomes can be seen and they too are golden brown. It's Sour diesel and Gel 48. They've been smoked throughout the year without problems and I'd say in the last 3 months they really browned. They were fine when they were put away.

Stored at Rh 58 to 62 and stored in a room with exposure to sunlight through a window. Northern lights stored in same conditions, while not shown looks "normal" green.

I do not personally smoke brown bud but wouldn't disparage someone who does. I would make a few pounds of some killer coconut oil tho :weed:

Eta: ya I've thrown away garage bags of this stuff in my lifetime :(

My old partner vacuum seals lbs and stores them in a safe located in a cool basement with a dehumidifier that runs 365 . They all turn that color for some reason . Smokes ok , makes good bubble hash .

Looks a little suspect in this picture. If your buds had Botrytis (bud rot) even slightly and you stored them, the botrytis can continue to consume the buds and spread, this bud pic looks almost like mold. Does the weed have any funky smell like dirty wet clothes or a damp basement?

A lot of the time the brown color is due to light exposure over time. Assuming you stored the bud in clear glass jars and didn't put them in a pitch black box or space, that would be your answer if not bud rot causing a degradation.

The smell in the jar is ok, has a sour d smell. An individual bud smells like dried plant matter. That's what I don't understand. The Northern lights stored next to it is looks normal. I just don't know! Thanks for the reply.

Chlorophyll breaks down over time and like others said it's mostly light oxidization.
Our jars sleep in black totes in the basement.

I kept some buds from last harvest in my seed fridge and pulled them out a few weeks ago, compared them to the ones I have jarred and sitting on a shelf in a room that gets fairly good light. The ones in the fridge were much greener. I think that proves if you keep them cool and in a dark place they will stay green longer. I have many jars from older harvests, but they were all kept on that same shelf for some time, turned brownish, and are now in storage in a container in a dark closet. I've had people smoke this stuff and they liked it, no complaints.

Eurforia 7 month cure.jpg

These are some bad-bad-bad-ass nugs, Euforia, from 2 harvests ago. Probably been curing for 5 months or so, half that time in a dark closet. I had some people I just met smoke it and they all said it was great, one person said it was mildly psychedelic. ITs mainly green, some brown, tons of orange hairs.

Some things do it genetically faster than others like chem 4 for example or certain skunk#1 phenos cured for a good bit brown out however its sped up by exposure to light heat and stuff so theres two different reasons why it goes brown really exluding botrytis in a wet environment obviously

Yea next time put in basement if can and always no sunlight. Usually around a year if just in jars will naturally decarb itself working it's way up the bud. Cold and amber or colored glass mason jars are better. I would check really good on that piece did look like a piece of rot.

Aside from what people already pointed out about the rot, it's possibly that even without any rot during harvest it can still get contaminated and mold later on. Same with other 'herbs' and tea.

I'd use it to create butter or oil. Wouldn't judge if smoked in bong...
