Hey guys..
first attempt indoors but i would like to know a good light cycle for the vegetative stage from germination to the blooming stage which is 12/12. What would the appropriate lighting be fore indoors hps light? 20/4?

thanks for the help guys.

I have done 18/4 and 24/0 same plants same period different rooms. 24 definately grew faster. I always veg 24/0 for first 20 days then switch to flower. just my 2 cents

I have never heard about light limitations either. I've always assumed long as they are getting light they are growing. I'm for 24/0 to just get them started (2-3 weeks) then properly flowering them. 12/12 8-12 weeks.

I've been doing 24/0 for 31 years? That's a whole lot of wasted power if this is a scientific surety.

Could you possibly cite a source for this claim? Thanks.

I've never heard this before.
MrFishy per Gardening Indoors by George Van Patten he states,"Most mature plants can process only 16-18hrs of light per day efficiently. After that, a point of diminishing returns is reached and the electricity is used inefficiently. I advise to turn light off after 18hrs and give all plants at least 6hrs of darkness."

..he also briefly mentions this light cycle which would be a good experiment.

"Experiments with short-day plants show that if the light is turned off for 6hrs and on for 12hrs, plants can actually live a faster life. That is, a short day plant can actually live a 24hr day in 18hrs. But this bit of trivia is more scientific jousting than practical application, and no electricity is saved."

Thanks Lokes. Interesting.
The word 'mature' is important to this discussion.

All in all, lots of hours of light during veg will cut down on overall veg time and get you to 12/12 faster.
On this I believe we can all agree.

limitations on light are not by hours but by lumens, light 24/0 not a waste having mor than about 7,000 lumens per sq ft is a waste of electricity, the sun puts out like 10,000 on a clear day in direct sunlight:peace:

I think its good for plants to have down time just like every bio organism. That's when allot of repair takes place and allows other process the plant utilizes to work; such as CO2 and O2 processes actually reverse at night to cleanse the plant.

I like benzo's method also, using 24hr, then 18hr, which allows for a good start and then gives time for plants to do there thing repairing during dark hrs.

Well from this threads inspiration I am thinking I will try 1 1/2 weeks of 24/0 then switch to 18/6 for another 1 1/2 weeks. After 3 weeks of veg, time to switch to my favorite time, flowering!
