One girl with lots of buds and three plants with hardly any. . .?

This is my second bag seed grow-- I have four plants at 6 weeks and have been 12/12 from seed, 400w HPS, Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil. The first grow I vegged for 4 weeks at 18/6, used MG soil and same light and I only had one plant and I got a stocky bud heavy harvest. My question for this grow: The plants seem really stretchy and airy and only one of the plants is showing a lot of bud sites and the others have a few and haven't changed much in the last week. Is 400w enough light for 4 plants? Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. IMG_9833.jpgIMG_9834.jpgIMG_9835.jpgIMG_9836.jpgIMG_9837.jpg

Before I upgraded, I used to grow under a 400 watt. It will handle four plants no problem. I grew 14 in my closet one time and every plant got so heavy they were leaning on each other like drunks. I see bud sites on all the plants but they don't look like they are 6 weeks in, they look more like 2 weeks in. How close is the light? Can you add ventilation and get it closer? In the pictures, it seems to get pretty dim under the metal grate and those bud sites may not get enough light and give you " popcorn buds" if you veg next time, try a scrog setup with that metal grate to focus the light on that area. Personally I would remove anything below the grate that doesn't look promising so each plant can dedicate more nutrients and energy into the top cola.

When I grew under my 400, I often wondered if it was strong enough, and often blamed the light for shortcomings in my harvest. Smh. I had no ph pen, no ppm pen, I grew in home depot soil, the only thing I did right was buy some botanicare nutrients but then I'd come home and mix it with 8.2 tap water. And I STILL grew a decent crop. A 400 will work fine for growing but if you really want to make improvements. 1 use good soil like roots organics, happy frog, or in your case ffof, 2 get a ph pen, it's really important, your expensive nutrients are useless if not ph'd correctly. You will notice happier plants and bud sites all over. Happy growing!

Hi Redbird : ) I think you may be right about the ventilation. With just one plant the first time --there was more air circulation-- so maybe i need to get a fan -- also I did move the light down closer so maybe that will help. The metal grate thing is a shelf-- and I would have to dismantle the whole shelving unit thing to move it--which is just a clusterfuck--lol-- I didn't realize they would get so tall this time--I thought 12/12 was supposed to grow smaller plants--gah! And a pH pen? Dang. Knowing pH levels and nute balancing sounds so complicated it hurts my head.

They are probably stretching because of the dissipating light ( light wasn't close enough) but they will stretch some naturally during the flower phase. Now that you've adjusted the light, keep an eye on temps to make sure everything is ok. Def add a fan if you can. Ph pens are only 20-30 bucks I think, and its really easy. Optimum ph for soil is 6.3-6.5. By phing the water you keep the soil, and thus the entire root zone in check. Even though you are probably feeding them a complete formula, MJ can't absorb certain nutrients at a ph of 7 or higher, and can't absorb a completely different set of nutrients at 6 or lower, but if you adjust every watering, you know she's getting everything you give her throughout the grow. Gives you peace of mind also. Make it a priority! I had no idea until I got one

Another thing, bagseeds will exhibit different traits and phenotypes, so maybe these just grow a little different than the last grow Everything will be good. there are many knowledgeable and helpful people on this site.
