Went through my ASM training today and completed it. Next is my OLC. Kinda bored with "learning how to survive in the wilderness" since i have developed my own methods through the years but am glad for a solid foundation.

REALLY taken back by the strictness of the guidelines and whatnot but glad they are there for the most part.

Don't let on ... it could be construed as not being prepared ... cn

I wonder if the guidelines are really that bad? I was a priest for awhile but had some issues with some of the younger boys in my church. I was 'released', and just really looking for a way to get back into touch with children. . . lol jk seriously though, sounds fun.

Say what? That's actually not a bad idea. I went from cub to boy scout in my earlier years. I might need to check this out.
i was never in Boyscouts growing up. My family taught me all i needed to know. Unfortunately, today's society doesn't allow that all that much any more and there are kids who live right here, 45 minutes away from the Sierras that have never been to the mountains.

Lol. i WILL be prepared for our outings. i learned today that when it gets overwhelming, BSA suggests that the adult take a ten minute walk/timeout to gather his thoughts. Should work out well if i take about 3-4 walks a day ;)

I can't imagine. When I was in school, all we did was throw a keg in the back of the truck and take a 15 minute drive up the mountains every weekend. You learn the mountains REAL quick around here. lol

Before our boys can even wade across a 6" deep creek, i must be BSA lifeguard certified.

I have zero experience with Scouts and Scouting. I riffed on their motto. ;) However, if they give you that advice, I would be very surprised if they didn't have a stash of activities that can "cover for you" on those ten-minute wit-gathering missions ... cn

Boy scouts were a great after school activity growing up. Pine wood derbys, camping, learning about the outdoors, selling popcorn, learning how to tie knots and all that good stuff.

Good for you man.

They definitely do! The boys can rest, eat, continue without me (if there are other leaders, enough so we always have two adults with the kids), check gear, etc.

When a leader says "i need some time.", it is granted lest you have a lawsuit from an irate leader becoming politically incorrect.

I was in a flash flood once, and that makes very good sense to me. Six inches of fast water can dump a WWF fighter. cn

A very true observation that i hadn't considered. Of course, in a flash flood, a lifeguard can do nothing more than care for casualties imo. Same as i can being BSA first responder certified.

I was in Scouts until they started making a big deal out of banning gays. Which is a shame. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, trying to decide how i'll personally handle that issue. Got no problems myself but am expected to uphold their guidelines. Guess if it comes down to it, my views will ostracize me from that organization too. Just trying to educate my boy in real world matters.

I'm not judging or anything. I think it's a great program. Mormons are hip deep in Boyscouts and I spent most of my childhood in one troop or another.

Funny you mention Mormons. Our leaders today, one an LDS, were saying they don't agree with the LDS Scout policies. THEY'RE biggest beef was having to re-arrange/plan campouts to accomodate the LDS Scouts leaving Saturday night soas to be able to attend church on Sunday.

What better place to worship than in nature?

Well, we're not supposed to be doing any activities that detract from the sabbath. It's supposed to be spent contemplating the plan of salvation, visiting the sick and elderly and generally being bored to tears. No movie theaters, no eating in restaurants or shopping. You're not even supposed to be cooking meals. Usually they are prepared the night before. I spent many a Sunday eating cold fried chicken. :p

See, imo, what better way to withdraw from society and focus on God and His creations than to be living in them? Enjoying what God gave me is no work at all when away from others.

Oh I'm in complete agreement, but, church policy is church policy. LOL
