is foxfarm ocean forest too potent for seedlings and should it be mixed with other soil?

yes. you definatly need to mix it with a soiless mix. i use 70% sunshine#4 soilless mix and 30% foxfarm ocean forrest. and mixed a teaspoon of lime for good measure. if you use straight ocean forrest i wouldnt worry so much about the nutrients because they are organic. but its the density of ocean forrest thats no good. the roots will have a hard time breaking through all that thick potting soil where ass if you mix it with perlite or whatever.. it will lighten the mix up a bit promote nice strong roots!!!

i here people say this all the time....i personally use ocean forest and have no problems at all planting seeds into a mix of straight ocean forest ..never burns them, I also plant my clones in it, I don't mix it down at all, but I don't feed for 2 weeks, just water.....works great, i love it...........but I still here people say it's to strong for seedlings and new clones all the time..I have not had this ever...but still be careful

I have been using OF for the past 4years or so. I have never had a burn problem on seedlings or new clones. I will feed my clones right from the start with a light dose of nutes and never get burn. A lighter soil would be better for seedlings/clones, but not required. Especially if you always have a bag or two of OF laying around.

I've started quite a few seeds in FFOF without problems. To say a seed can't grow in FFOF is like saying a seed or plant can't survive in fertile soil.

I do all my seedlings in 50/50 mix of FFOF and FF Happy Frog.. never had a burn, only happy plants :)
I am using this mix as well for the first time and I am having nothing but problems with it and I mixed in a shit load of perlite. Check my sig to see proof. Im not bagging FF I want it to work I just don't know what it is I am doing wrong.

That is because happy frog is shit soil. There have been a lot of people over watering using the happy frog because it holds moisture much more than the OF.

I<M on my first grow with ocean forest also. Granted i,m in experianced but my seeds and clone started well in it but now that they are big i wish I had mixed some perlite in it to drain faster and allow for more gas exchange in the soil. I have heard that people have found grubs in it and spiter mites because it isnt sterilized .Frankly I wish I knew what soil was best.

Here are a few pics of some seeds that for some reason would not germinate, they were in wet paper towels for almost a week. I decided to give them a chance and threw them in some FFOF yesterday, these are less than 24 hours old under a 200w CFL with 6.5 ph level water

definitely FFOF for early on. I can say that Happy Frog is all dense and cakey like. I don't know how to explain it. I personally like Ocean Forest vs HF. But then again, I'm over soil and moved to coco :)

ive used ffof for 3 years for clones and seedlings and never had any probs.i think if you over water the soil it could burn them a little its pretty hot soil as far as nutrients go.
