The point is, here is the "founder of American libertarianism" admitting he captured a word from what he called his enemy. That he describes his enemy as left wing only proves that he is right wing.
I doubt you know enough about the French Revolution to know what the metaphor means, but I'll give you a hint, it is socioeconomic and the language has become so muddled that the metaphor is meaningless. American politics are occupied by two "right wing" parties and a "libertarian party" even further to the right than both.
