Nutrients vs lighting

Ok so i just got through my very first grow. i grew 5 plants under 276 watts of CFL lighting under a screen (scrog). End result i still haven't weighed it get but im guessing its only around 2 ounces total. and alot of small nugs.

On to my questions
i was just using a organic soil mix i pulled off of here know as "Vics soil mix" and using water only.

what should give me and better OVERALL result. Better lighting? or better nutrients? if i get into growing with Mh and HPS lighting im gonna need a bigger grow space, ie a grow closet,

whats the minumum size closest i can use a 400w setup?

OR can i add nutrients to my current soil mix?

well from the soil to the screen, its 12 inches,im guessing they grew to about 20-24 inches. im working with a 3x3x3 cab

right now i currently have only 1 plant that im going been mainlining outside, i just threw it in there yesterday to flower. i want to try something different, i want to feed it something!

but let me tell you i might have gotten ALOT out of my first grow but potency is THERE!

For the size of your plants I would not think you should expect to much more. Also I think that space would not work w/ a 400w HPS. Bare minimum you would need 10" away from the plant which would mean even smaller harvest. But take what I say w/ a grain of salt because I have not grown anything yet, just been doing research non stop the last two weeks.

If I stick a 400 watter in the ill be cooking plants, I'm wanting to upgrade my equipment. My question was ,whats the smallest size closet I could get away with for a 400w light setup, 2x4,4x4?

I have seen plenty of people using a 600w in a 4x2 it all depends on how much ventilation you are doing. 400w HPS puts out 55,000 lumens and you at least want 5,000 lumens for each square foot, I have read that you get diminishing returns past 10,000 lumens per sqft. With that in mind I would go w/ a 3x3 w/ 6,111 lumens sqft like you are all ready doing but w/ more vertical room for the heating issues, or a 4x2 w/ 6875 lumens sqft. If it were me I would go w/ a 3x3 w/ a 600w but thats what I would do and I am sure you want to use a 400w for a reason.
