I used to buy that dried "worm casting" powder from a local. It was trash..

Incredibly surprised what fresh casting can do in comparison.. the second I added the fresh castings the mix began to heat up immediately from the microbial population.

The dry castings did not, in any way, work as an activator as stated on the packaging.

Now I've just gotta take your advice and start my own worm bin. I'm driving half an hour to pay for something I could be making with my scraps.

the worm bin is the way to go for fresh castings!takes care of most kitchen scraps ,no problem not to say anything about trimmings from the plants, worms love 'em!

Yes I also enthusiastically endorse fresh worm casting from your own bin. I literally feed my plants kitchen trash. That powdered microbe recharge stuff or liquid EM-1 is “ok” as a microbial inoculant but nothing works like fresh vermicompost. It’s alive!!! Starting a worm bin is the baller-est move a grower can make imho.
