Number of Nodes in Flowering?

What is the minimum (recommended) number of nodes that a plant should have in the vegetation stage before switching over to flowering? After switching over to flowering, how many additional nodes, if any, does the plant develop?

Are you serious?

I've read in the grow FAQ somewhere that you're supposed to wait till you have several alternating nodes before you start to flower, but I don't think many people wait that long.
