Northern Lights...Sativa??

NL is very much an Indica. That same site says it has a moderate difficulty rating as far as growing whch is also wrong. NL is easy to grow which is one of the things that makes it great for newbies.

The NL that I got says its 95% Indica / 5% sativa
iv just grown sum northern lights cuttings from my previous grow. the seeds where from nirvana and i got a mixed selection ov sativa and indica/sativa. iv just cut down the shorter 1 after 6 weeks and the sativa still has a couple more week to go. so id say its possible to get the sativa side to it but i guess ultimatly its gown to the breeders and seed banks.

i got this NL im growing now thats like. completely sativa looking.
im a grave digger. i getting threads that didnt have much chatter with the subject being somewhat misleading.

i have seen breeders & seed co's list northern lights (*insert numner here) marketed as 50/50 indica sativa, some as "mostly sativa". Its always different because it is said (as close as we'll ever know) because nevilles first start at NL was a pure landrace afghan(100& pure indica) and bred with a Thai. so from then on the genetics of either parent plant can be exploited to different percents.

maybe this will help.

I got familiar with the Northern lights family (originally said to be from the Pacific Northwest) back in the 1980's when Nevil's Seed Bank offered the whole lineup. The original Northern Lights family is genetically diverse.

Northern Lights 1 was a single stalked, compact plant with a moderate Afghani smell. No one offers this classic version at this time. A strong plant and buzz.

Northern Lights 2 was a sturdy, pine tree shaped with a musty and piney odor. Dutch Passion (Oasis) and THSeeds (Closet Queen) currently offer versions.

Northern Lights 2 X 5 from The Seed Bank was very bushy and resinous with a strong juniper berry smell. A truly remarkable hybrid not offered by anyone.

Northern Lights 5 is available from BCSC for $75, a variety Nevil of The Seed Bank said was only available pure as a cutting. It is likely hybridized at one point.

Northern Lights 9 X 5 "disappeared" when Nevil sold his genetics to Sensi Seeds. This is the only original Northern Lights 9 genetics source to my knowledge.

These are the original Northern Lights breeding lines from which today's versions arose. Sensi Seed Bank sells Northern Lights with no number attached. Having access to Nevil's original genetics, my guess is that they crossed an Northern Lights 1 male to their Northern Lights 5 mother and stabilized the results. Northern Lights Special is a hybrid from KC Brains in Holland of Sensi's Northern Lights crossed to a Haze female. Northern Lights 9 was only sold in seed form as a hybrid to the Northern Lights 5 mother plant by Nevil at The Seed Bank during the late 1980's. Sagarmatha receives a lot of their strains delivered to them as a finished product from outside breeders. It is possible that someone produced these seeds. The known fact of a Northern Lights 9 male existing meant purebred seed should have been possible to produce, unless it was a male only strain. Trichome Technologies has a strain named Northern Lights 6, another related family member.

My fifth of a dime:

Every time I grow Northern Lights, and I have since the 80's... I see the same growth patterns and color and effects. the plant won't get taller than 4 feet no matter how long it grows (especially true indoors). The leaves are very deep emerald green against the buds - which are the brightest "powder" green (only way to describe it). During the first parts of the life-cycle, the leaves look like an indica dominant hybrid. As the plant matures, leaves come out that are SUPER SKINNY with SUPER NARROW BLADES, like sativa. As these leaves get bigger, however, they get that familiar Indica round curve out on the bottom of the leaf blades. Sativa leaves don't do that. Then the fans on the buds - they are also very narrow and sativa looking. the sugar leaves are just rigid edge triangular protrusions. ALL OF THEM ARE THINNER THAN PAPER... another trait that don't show up in too many Indica plants I ever grew. So that is my experience with this strain. I have used it to make some of the best crosses I ever made. These plants will always amaze an unfamiliar grower with the sheer enormity of the colas and buds that accompany them. So crossing them with Skunk is an AWESOME cross no matter what NL or Skunk you happen to be working with. The first time I did this was an outdoor crop in the late 80's. People still talk about that shit today. Right now I have Skunk #1 and a REALLY AWESOME copy of some Northern Lights. It won't be too long before I cross them. Its like a seed bag gamble only better because you will never get a dud out of it. The yield time should remain closer to 8 weeks indoors, but if you have some slow skunk, expect it to take 10 or more. It will be MORE than worth it in yield and dankness. Like bag seed gambles, you might end up with a final product that has the potential of becoming the stuff of legends, and I am only speaking from experience here. The Skunk will make it sturdy so the plant that results SHOULD be able to support the MASSIVE colas that will be produced RAPIDLY after switching the lights. Peace.

One more thing I should mention about my copy of the Northern Lights strain that seems to have been floating around this area for several years because I feel like I am hanging out with an old best friend I haven't seen in years, you know! Anyways, yeah, as opposed to most Indica plants I ever grew AGAIN, this NL I am working with looks like it might be a little more than 8 weeks before finish time. Its week 7 right now and there are virtually NO orange hairs. The calyx are starting to swell up, and a couple here and there are looking like fat little corn husks, but I wouldn't be anticipating a harvest on these for at least ten or more days, just saying... yeah, whatever sativa got in there was the kind that takes forever... I hope the THC count is HIGH AS FUCK like a Super Sativa !!! check my grow journal kneecap's 2nd medical grow crop 3 in about 2 weeks to see 4 of them getting chopped down. There are buds on it that are every but bigger than a 2 liter bottle... later skater....
