Noisy Ballast Help

My 400w ballast is much noisier than expected. Is there anything I can do to quiet this thing down? It's audible from even outside the room and it's in a closet.

Holy crap lol. Well I won't hit it with a sledgehammer but I did put some Styrofoam under it, and that's sitting on the floor and I'm upstairs. My main concern is that the vibrations are resonating to downstairs.

Ok hopefully I will be able to get used to this and not get busted. Another question is should I be running 50,75, or 100% power on the ballast? Thanks

run 100%. my old ballast was noisy I just sat it on a small bit of plywood with a folded towel between ply and floor. got rid of 90% of the noise

Towel definitely helps dull the noise, thanks. as long as I don't cover up the fan, it won't overheat?

If I can't get the heat and noise from my 400w hps under control then I'm afraid i'll have to switch back to using CFLs :( any tips or ideas very much needed
I'm probably going to get an LED to solve these issues

If it's a brand new e ballast it should be quiet as hell. Mine I can't hear 10 feet away. I would call who you bought it from and return it.

What ventilation are you running? Leds are hot too, you will still need a good vent fan.

TJ Baba, Do you have a magnetic ballast or a digital one? I have 2 x 600 digital ballast and like Igothe6 says they are silent.
