Newbs always think that the growers before them just didn't think of their brilliant idea.. Or, they are reinventing the grow game...
It's a carbon filter, not a lifetime HEPA

Grow a few more... you'll see... I wasn't just being a dick saying "buy a new one".. Just trying to save you time. If you wanna learn the way I learned, go for it. Or, just use my experience to your advantage and go get a new one. That is what you'll have to do in the end to get a carbon filter that really works anyway.

yeah, i didn't really think running it under water would do much if anything at all to it.. but at this point, i don't think it would hurt anything giving it the good ole college try.. worst comes to worst, he'd have to buy a new one, which is about where he's at now imo..

A proper answer would have been that there are possible solutions but buying a new one is your best bet. What If I didn't have the money, what if its more about nt being wasteful, what if I just wanted a project. Your answer in the end might be the best solution but in life you can't just get answers and expect to learn you have to have it explained so you understand. I see your point in just taking someone else's (experienced) word for it. I love trial and error and the learning experience that comes with it...or I would have just paid the money obviously.

Well I'm runnin warm water through it right now and will run it for 15 minutes and then allow it to dry over night. IMO I don't think this will solve my problem but well worth a shot. I do not have hard water.

If that does not work I will then open the filter if I can to inspect the charcoal. After my observation I will simply purchase a new filter. Would replace the carbon but the fact that I've never seen the filter work puts me with numerous reasons why it may not be working and rather not waist any further time/effort on it.

Hey when in doubt take it apart. I bought a supposedly broken computer for a dime sack from a friend that promised me she had all her "tech" friends come look at it and they couldnt figure out why it didn't post or go to bios. Took it home, opened it up, turns out it had no RAM in it, threw couple of shitty Kingston Series X ram in it and boom she has been working as my FTP server ever since.

The carbon I purchased was covered in coal dust that had to be washed in order for it to be effective. Removing odors from a carbon filter is one thing, you need heat no household oven can produce, but getting dust out is another story. And packing carbon filters isn't that hard that you need special equipment Hank. A good floor, some construction boots, wadded up paper and some patience gets the job done just fine .

Well I hooked up the filter which still seemed to be a little damp and the only air coming out was through the cracks of the "lids". I'll give it another day to dry and try again tomorrow but the outcome isn't looking good.

UPDATE! IT WORKED! After running HOT water through it for about 15-20 minutes and allowing it to dry overnight i now have great suction from my fan while connected to the filter. Thanks recerboy71 for the help. You helped me save time (shipping) money and the environment.

I hope this helps someone else in a similar situation.

How is the air smelling post filtration?

did all kinds of nasty stuffs come out when you washed it out??

that's awesome it worked, glad it could be of some help for a change..

oh yeah for the first minute or two you could really see a black substance coming from the filter.

The smell is that of a carbon filter...dont really know how to explain that haha. The filter didnt have a bad smell to begin with so glad to see the water didnt cause a musky smell. Most important of course is that the air doesnt smell like sweet sweet mary jane.

I used the bucket on the bottom because the water was only coming through the bottom and not filtering through the whole thing. The funnel allowed me to concentrate the water inside the filter.
