you all been amazing on here with advice guys. but i got another question for you if using a NFT system and you growing in rock wool cubes i be using the 3 inch ones for cuttings. i understand you got to have a prolific root system coming out of the cubes before you put them into the tank. but i have been told any light that hits the roots the cuttings will be no good. so how do i protect the light from hitting the roots and destroying the cuttings. ive got a 200w cfl light to bring the cuttings on. or could i put them in the tank ready and water by hand till i get a good root mass. before filling the tank and turning the pump on. many thanks for any reply's

You'll want the clones to have had established a root system before dropping them into the nft system and with rockwool it'll be obvious when they're ready bc you'll see them trying to poke out from the bottom. If you have some kind of elevated tray that they're sitting on, the roots will air prune anyway so light isn't much of a worry. Are the cubes just sitting on a 1020 tray or something? If you really want to light block, panda film is great to have anyway. I bought a 10'x10' sheet probably 10 or so years ago and I'm still using it for misc grow room needs to this day.

I don't use rockwool but same thing keeping the roots hidden, root mass is suspended in net cup and covered with neoprene sleeve.

I don't use any mediums, cheaper and easier for me, ymmv. Clones are rooted in low pressure aeroponic cloner and vegged in low pressure aeroponic unit. Super simple. I did start with rockwool and seeds and it works fine as long as the rockwool is kept suspended above the water flow. No medium is just so much easier. I root seeds in my cloner now so no medium ever used.

I ran NFT rails and I used top feed lines until my roots were well established at the bottom of the rail.
