Newbie Strain Info 101

So, aside from being a new grower, I really don't know too much about different strains...

I can find books, sites, etc that list all different strains and their individual stats... but is there some reference out there that explains families, widows, rhinos, hazes, purples, etc...

just something that speaks about strains as a whole versus an individual account?

Well... I've read on some different sites about basic Indica and Sativa traits and then there are hybrids and lineages of different breeding from different continents and what was done in Cali and San Francisco in the 80's after the Reagan era forced growers underground and indoors.
You really have to read alot and it will all gel togteher after a while. Start with understanding the basic characteristics of high, taste, growth dynamics of sativa and Indica as well as the chemical makeupe ofthe high CBD% and THC% and how harvest affects sttrenght and characteristics of the high including harvesting early (cleaner energetic heady high) or late (stronger heavier body high).
Then you begin to understand the characteristcs of the Skunk#1 and the earl hybrids and why they were breeding for certain traits. After that different seed companies begin to go around the world and bring in different plants and work out the different penotypes to create what they are looking for in grow characteristics and high. This has been going on freely in the 60's and 70's but then there was a new era once indoor growing and breeding took place recently in history compared with other plants even though different cultures have been cultivating mary in their region for many many years. Read Michael Pollan's book the "Botany of Desire" and then get the cannabible by....
Those are good books to understand things. Others will have different info and books to contribute I would imagine. But start with understanding traits of Indica and Sativa which will speak more to the high and aspects of growth. Then you have to read and follow the lines of the "White" Strains in different places. Documentation and broader understanding might be had at Cannabis College in Amsterdam. It's constantly evolving and has very recently...
Fun stuff to understand and learn...:mrgreen::joint::joint:

+rep!

This is great man, thanks...

I do know the basics of Sativa v. Indica... but yeah its lineages etc and hybrids that I get lost in, and more importantly

What makes a strain a new strain and just not some "mutt?" Is there a chance there is a 'strain' out there with 2 different names???

The difference between a high end strain and a "mutt" is breeding. The guys from greenhouse travel and look at all different varieties and then select certain characteristics such as multiple colas vs. one cola. Then they either stabilize through successive breeding of the same plant over generations constantly breeding the same charactersistic over and over again until its stable and you end up with a consistent expectation everytime you plant a seed.
Additionally they have other stabilzed strains that they can cross breed in to affect all different kinds of things. A mutt might just be something someone bred a little but didn't stabilize over time with care. And even within the sativa's you might have a purple haze which is supposedly the cross of 5 different sativa's in order to get that certain high.
There are all different kinds of marijuana plants too. I read that even on a one mountain in S. America there were fifty different varieties each accustomed to it's own micro-climate on the mountain. There are alos 3 different smokeable varieties too, ruteralis, Indica, and Sativa. I would guess with all the plants in the cannabis family of which there are many more than these three there may be others that we could be smoking that have characteristics of a different high.
Strains are just variations of cannabis adapted to their particular regions of the world and then we find them and stabilize them and make hybrids of different varieties. But ultimately they are all one of those three varities unique to their region.
Hope I'm making sense.

its all so interesting.
what i find really interesting is when the cali scene was taking off in the 60-70's .
does anyone know specifically who or whatever brought all those new strains to cali ?
it seems to have coincided with a spread of Buddhist/middle eastern philosophy
but didn't want to hijack just curious and interested.:peace:

I would guess it was tied into the "going to california" movement, there was a mass migration of liberal youth in that direction to that place and they are all experiencing the psychadelic movement and so cultivating marijuana was just logical for them.
You also have 10's of 1000's of GI's returning from asia (bringing seeds or ganja back to try and forget, which is one function of the receptors that brain has for it, cannabinoids activate the mechanism in the brain that actively empties and dumps memory) and drugs and prostitution are very accessable in Asia particularly Vietnam at that time.
On top of that it's climate is perfect for growing because it got so much sun and living and gardening in co-ops and sustainable living was such a big thing at the time. I can think of more reasons but those are bit of what I read...

Just got back from seeing Dark Star, it was really great :eyesmoke:
