Hope you guys can help- I think I may have messed up and hope to salvage. Germed seeds in paper towels and planted yesterday with white tap root up because of info that root will turn 180 degrees. Today, the root was above the soil so I (mistakenly) removed the humidity cover and put a light on it. After some research, it seems root should be planted down and the cover should stay on until first leaves emerge.

Have I totally ruined these seeds, or do you guys think that I can carefully remove them (or add soil) when I get home, replace the humidity cover, and they'll continue to grow okay? I'm a bit worried I just messed it all up.

you don't want lights on your roots - that is true. if your root popped through the soil - bury it a little deeper. the less you touch them, the better.

Do you think in the few hours that the light will be on them (until I can get home and fix the whole sit-u-ation) that I'll have totally fried the root and ruined my chances of a decent plant?

I know it seems paranoid, but this is truly the first time I've sprouted *anything* so I appreciate the input. :-|

it depends on how hot your light is and how moist your soil. you'll know if they are burnt. if they appear shiny, moist and white - you are good to go.

And while there are many successful first time growers, you would be wise to have very low expectations for your first few attempts.

Sigh. I know- I already killed some seedlings accidentally by incorrectly hardening them off. Trial and error, I suppose- but I really (really) appreciate the assistance. It's one of those things that you can read on and know about "in theory" but it takes practice to figure out.

true. and try not to "over-think" - it is a weed after all

Germinate them - as soon as you see the seed crack - or a little bit of white sticking out - bury them about 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep. Keep them in the dark, moist (and warm) but not too hot or wet. when you see them popping through get them under lights (as close as possible without burning).

don't overwater, overheat or overfeed.
plenty of light and fresh air and don't over worry or over "love" them.

take pictures every day or so if you really want to see the progress.
