Well to start i'm Ivan, just joined, and have been reading the past 2 weeks here, other forums and torrents, and am looking to get started growing by mid-January, since I'm a geek, I like to read and learn as much as I can to make a mostly informed decision.
At any rate I'll lay down my proposed setup and see what you guys think or if it seems acceptable. What i'm looking at is a cordoned off section of my Garage, probably a 5x5x10-11 for the flowering spot and probably a 3x5x10 for the veg'ing area sorry I haven't gotten to the exact measurements but thats a rough estimate.
For the lights I was looking at a 1000W HPS setup for the Flowering/Cloning spot and I've started putting it together myself from a DIY ballast kit and should be done by tomorrow...If only i'd known Part numbers I probably could have saved another $50.
For the veg. I was looking at 4 T5 4' bulbs (some had mentioned a Cool White - Warm White - Cool White - Warm White setup? Does that matter too much?) as well as some Mylar for reflection and the IR it is supposed to help with for my paranoid side. I'll also be going with soil as the medium, as most people have said it is far more forgiving than hydro. Also it seems most people around like FoxFarms Ocean forest with a bit of worm castings as well? or is this more of a preference type thing where as long as it's the proper PH & enough Nutes it's fine?
I have my PH meter from a pool, and will need to get some PH + & - as well as later on getting some nutes, atm i haven't done too much research into how much should be used (assuming that is on the bottle) and how frequently or even which is preferred here, Anyway this is about as far i've gotten in the past week and a half from going from no knowledge to now.
While I understand their are too many variables to count I won't ask you the question everyone seems to get frustrated with us newbs about "how much will this setup yield" I just wondered what everyone thinks about the setup as a whole? I.E. what you think, what you'd change, in the next few days i'll try and up a pic or something, but it's a fairly large space so with a few oscillating fans and a cool tube setup I think I can evacuate most of the heat.
I don't have a lot to spend, only about $500 max, which is why i'm trying to cut costs by wiring myself etc. wherever possible (IT & Electrical work really coming in handy here).
Also as the title suggested what are some good Books or videos for a "Growing 101" as it were, I work IT so a lot of the time i'm burning time away by playing WoW or reading engadget/geekologie so it'd be nice to do something a little more productive
