OK... completely new to all this growing stuff! Just finished reading Jorges' new book... excellent.
Now I have a question. I am seeing a few 400W MH High Bay Barn lights (ballast, bulb, and crappy reflector) for sale at the moment, cheap. Cheap as in <$40 per unit. These are second hand but have not been abused.
I know that I should try and get new asap but, these fit budget.

Are they any use?

My plan.
1 - I have a few CFL 65W/500W floods and am planning on using these for germination, rooting, cloning, etc.
2 - Veg. A couple of 400W MH with CFL flood sidelights
3 - Bloom. Slap a HPS conversion bulb (400W) in the fixtures and run 2 of these + 2 MH and CFL sidelights.

This is gonna be for a 9 plant setup in the veg and in the bloom rooms. set out in a square. Ebb and Flow hydration.

any thoughts???

Hmmm... just read the lighting chapter again and think I may have overestimated the amount of light.

I am thinking of scaling this down a little..

Plan.
Germinating seeds now. Paper towel, etc. As this is my first 'experiment' its 10 fat dark brown bagseed.
Then transfer them to expanded peat pellets and continue under a couple of LOW 65/500W 4U flouros.

My veg and flower rooms will be 5'by6' and plants will be on a table in the center, water/nute mix underneath, ebb and flow.
------------
| X X X | table and plants (X)
------------
Lighting, 1x 400W MH 18/6hr cycle, with one flouro on each side of the table for side lighting.

Flowering room same size and setup but with different nutes and 2x 400W HPS and CFL sides.

thats as far as the plan gets so far, looking for soilless mix, etc.

The High Bay barn lights are the only option for me at the moment. Has anyone had any experience of them or even heard if they work.
I expect them to run HOT as the ballast is attached to the top of the real nasty relflector.

My plan for the lights is to use a couple right now as they are, and doctor a few of them. I will be installing a disconnect between the ballast and the lamp, and extending the lamp cord so that I can hang the ballasts away from the lights. At the same time, I will replace the socket and install in a better reflector hood.

Anyone done anything like this?

If this thing works. I have some Bubblegum and some Northern Lights seeds that I am planning to play with!!

Oh... Another question, I was thinking of planting the peat pellets into 6" pots. Will these be large enough for 6-10 weeks of growth?
