Newbie fan help please?

Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster, how you all doing?

Ok, so I'm about to start my first grow soon and I'll be scrogging, it'll be a 1.2x1.2x2m tent with 600 Watt HPS, using biobizz products, but that's not important right now. I'm having a hard time with fans, I could have a way to get a bargain but I need to know if a fan like this one could be made to use a carbon filter. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/IN-LINE-EXTRACTOR-FANS-EXCEED-BUILDING-REGULATIONS-/250847684192?pt=UK_Home_Garden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&var=&hash=item8010b45535 (150mm)

Obviously it probably won't have a direct fitting for any kind of filter but I've been pondering if, with ducting, it could be made to attatch to a 150mm filter and to function as normal, because I don't really want to pay £49.99 for a 100mm fan with filter when I could pay £55 for one that has 2x m3/h

Also while I'm here, I'm looking for a nice cheap starter strain, currently thinking nirvana misty for the yield and ease of grow but all opinions are welcome.

As long as it's pulling air through the filter it must be working right? Think you may be onto something here, and for 8 quid, unless anyone has more knowledgeable advice on here, why not try it? I may well do next time I need a fan, nice one

Thanks, just been looking these past few days to bring overall costs down so that I can splash out on nutrients and all the actual essentials, then mulled this one over and thought "Hey, beats the £40.00 hydro shops on ebay want for it, and certainly beats Greenfingers' £75 quote for one" Good to see someone from our little rock by the way, how's the weather been for ya lately.

I got a fan, filter and ducting from charlieshydro on ebay for £60. The fans was a bit noisy so i put it in a cardboard box with a load of insulation which sorted it. Keep me posted how it works with the fan, I'm wanting a cool tube some time soon which aren't cheap, so anything to bring the price down helps.
What kind of grow you doing? Couldn't recommend a strain really; I've just started working my way through all the quality/expensive indicas ;-)
Ha ha! We've got to be on the same pissy rock because we're talking about the weather already like proper Brits...and it's pissing down!:-)

Yup, great weather for ducks, I'll definately update on this thread when it arrives and I get the wiring done, if this works then I'll have found a way to get an intake/extractor combo for less than one standard fan. Also if anyone already does know if a filter can be attatched just to ducting then please drop a message as that makes my job done because I'll know it works, hehe. Worst case scenario some masking tape will do the job.

Duct tape will definitely join the two...it has on mine.;-)
And seeing as you're English, you won't take offence in my saying "Get a grow journal going you slag!!":lol: They're a great help for a start of grow, and it'd be good to see how it's going...?

Ehehe, I fully intend to but doubt that my journal will be all too impressive as it will be a first grow so for the most part it's prolly gonna be pictures of burnt seedlings. And I've figured out that as long as ducting fits snuggly around a carbon filter's edge then it will be able to attatch to my extractor fan by that link (or so I suspect). Now my job is finding a 6" carbon filter for under £35 which is proving difficult. May have to drop to a 5" fan which I don't particularly want to do, but I'm good at scrimping so we'll see how things go.

Hey noobface, I was considering the same fan for my first grow but ended up buying fan+filter+ducting combo as saving on delivery made sense because I also bought ballast+bulb from the same place, otherwise I would have tried it no doubt. You will most likely not find a 6" filter for that money though, but you could easily use 5" one with 6" fan, or even make one yourself if ure handy with tools. How many plants you plan to grow and whats your budget for beans?

Im gonna be gowing a 4 plant scrog with a really low seed budget of £20. It's not a lot of money but what I'm looking for is practice seeds that could be decent if I get it right. Looks like you're right on the carbon filter subject though, but for a 5" filter would I just have to cut a segment out of the ducting to reduce its radius and then stick it on? seems like the method to me. Don't really want to make one from scratch because for a first grow I need everything to be quite functional.

However you do it, as long as its airtight and theres no leaks it will work fine. And I would drop that ebay stor a message asking if this fan is ok for 24/7 operation, as in theory it`s bathroom/kitchen fan, you know, just to make sure. Cant suggest any particular strain really as Im only on my second grow now but im sure if you create another thread with that question you will get proper response from those in the know.
