why not just get into a 1000 watt light if you can get it for like 175.00 then spend 120.00 on a hordilux bulb that leaves you like 200.00 say 75.00 for nutes 50.00 for decorating your walls and 75.00 for misc like 20.00 for aluminum 4 " duct venting , bathroom venting fan thermometer, and u will have a smokin room.
sure u have a Fan kickin around not sure how big of room your going to use but either way lighting is superior

zx12r, get a single 5 gall bucket like fab said, invest in another 2 6500k cfl's for your vegging, for a single plant i would buy a 400w hps for flowering, make yourself a decent frame from some wood, buy some poly/viscous sheet from hardware store and wrap your frame, throw your lights in, grab a fan to circulate air inside, youll also need 1 small fan to extract heat, you could just use an opening in the poly as a passive intake, and away you go, good luck.

Lol, lots of suggestions here. There are so many ways to do it man. I suggest finding your own way.. $500 is a lot to start with..
How big do you want to go? if you're looks around 5 - 7 plants. you can just use a 400w HPS.
HPS is the best option dollar for Watt. And you can use the one bulb for both veg and flower.
Sectioning off a corner in the basement is a good idea unless there is already a room.
If you're going dirt, you'll save some money on pumps and hoses and stuff.
If you want to go hydro think simple at first, like a airoponics system.
Flood tables are a bit advance for a first timer.
Heat and moisture will be an issue, so think about ventilation, a good fan will be needed.. Something that moves lots of air, if it doesn't have to be quiet you can save some money there..
The walls can be painted white, or for a bit more you can buy reflective mylar.. I get mine from the dollar store as emergency space blankets. $1 each..
Nutes are key, you'll want to get some good nutes, general hydroponics is my fave. Buy some online..
Little PH test strips cost like $5 - $10 a pack of like 100.. PH up and down are like $10 a bottle. You don't need a digital PH tester, they are very expensive.
With a 400w you can use a regular timer, I got one from walmart, it's digital and everything. $10.
You will also want a separate room for clones, a small cabinet or a sectioned of corner of a room is ok, just make sure it's light tight..
In it you'll need a few small fans for ventilation and some CFL's also reflective or painted walls..
Also you'll need peat pucks, or rockwool and some dirt or expanded clay pellets if you're going hydro.. Some pots or buckets. And some decent water. Filtered or spring water. If you use tap water you'll have to let it stand a day or two to let the chlorine dissipate..
There are quite a few good tutorials here, and other places like a bit torrent site where you can get info on how to do it a specific way, the bottom line is, there is thousands of ways to do it, none of them are the best or set in stone, it's all subjective as to how you are comfortable doing it..
As a first timer I suggest Dirt not hydro.. Good luck man, and do plenty of research before you jump in..

Your comment shows your lack of knowledge regarding internet security, if you think for a second that some lame antivirus is keeping you safe then you are nieve, you can download through p2p and scan all you want with online multiscanners but AV and firewall are all bypassable, goto www.hackhound.org, have a look at there crypters, have a look at some of there trojans, remote admin tools, password stealers etc, p2p is the fastest and quickest way to spread viruses, it self spreads too, through Microsoft OS exploits, msn, aol, p2p, like limewire, edonkey, kazzaa, etc.
At least with warez sites, you never allow anyone to connect to your machine, allowing others unattended access to your machine through p2p is like going on holidays and leaving your house open, someone will eventually help themselves.
Even using a Virtual enviroment is useless, a single line of code asks the virus to check if its being executed within a virtual enviroment, if yes, then the trojan wont execute.
I do Network Security and White hat hacking for a living and ive heard every single claim regarding p2p's safety, fact and reality is, its highly vulnerable.
Anyways, we highjacking this thread with unrelated crap, im not going to sit here and argue it with you, you do things your way, good luck.

If you really think about it, 5 bills doesn't go very far when you're trying to do something right, although its a definite start . hell I don't know how much I've put into my room but its a lot. I don't settle out for less but then again I also don't have to have top of the line shit. Just today I spent 125 bux on all the shit to build an aeroponic unit. the week before that it was 5 bills on nutrients, the week before that it was 5 bills on a co2 controller and an overkill exhaust fan. The real important thing to begin with is being able to keep the environment right (something I wasn't even ready for on my first grow , odd it turned out good).

hey fab, i will be MIA for awhile since i'm back to work for the week. I will try to get some pics and dimensions of the space i plan to use. i've found some good deals on ebay for 400 and 600 watt switchable lights so that will probably be the route i take. there is no rush. this is basically to keep my wife supplied with decent smoke, hence the small grow. i very seldom smoke but it's something she likes to do and the quality of herb around here is very poor. ideally i'm looking at being up and growing in about a month or two.
