I just got this thing from general hydroponics called a cuttingboard. its just a rubbermaid with net pots and and airstone loop.

but i dont understand how it works - should the water level be above the bottom of the net pots so the rockwool cube in the pot is in the water, or should the water level be below the pots, because the bubbles bursting will water the cubes enough?

basically i dont understand if this is a dwc system or not.

thanks!

Welcome to Hydroponics!!

Sounds like you have a dwc with a bubbler system. In that case fill your water/nutrient level up to within an inch to half an inch of the bottom of the net pots. Make sure you have some kind of medium (i.e. hydroton clay pellets, silica rock, coco coir, etc.) on the bottom of the net pots and to fill in around the sides of the rockwool cube.

You don't want the rockwool cubes sitting in water or too wet. You're correct in that the bubbles need to break the surface and provide moisture and feeding to your roots until they are long enough to reach the water level. You may also need to hand water the net pots from the top for a while in the beginning until your roots develop.

Good luck with hydro. When it works it's great; when it doesn't work it's HELL. Ph is very important in hydro. Keep your ph adjusted to 5.6.

great, thanks very much :D

i dont have any hydroton in there, i'll put some in now. the pots are small though and the smallest rockwool cube only just fits in there (no room round the sides) but i'll see if i can get a few in the bottom if it will help.
