You can never design good software if you don't know hardware.

I suggest starting with old PIC processors and a little pic programmer to learn what they are doing at a hardware level. I used one to make a little meter that measures capacitance and inductance on unmarked components when I strip electronics for parts.

Well, not hardware-oriented software :)
My "needing to know hardware" (re software) only gets down to knowing x86 and x64 assembly language though - it doesn't require soldering the CPU, just talking to her and knowing how to utilise L1 L2 etc :)

ps. Spectre/Meltdown, I can't help but find something BEAUTIFUL in that attack which unites hardware and software in such a way. I mean it's bad news for everyone, but I still find it beautiful in a way

Sorry, anyway back to the subject at hand! lol :)

just knock that loose connector off and solder wire direct to the pcb..
the firts co inordered rom had some weak connectors and theshipping was rough
i learned to solder..its easy..

I would have opened the lid and applied heat to the exposed contacts while trying to stick the wire in to push them open when they get hot enough.

I didnt use much physical force (just tweezers), but when trying to de-solder both left and right solder connections it wouldn't budge

I have confidence in the connection now though after taking off the "2mm x 4mm back lever" and letting the soldering iron tip "free" the seeming problem of soldered-gates

That's sort of what i did -- as soon as I held the soldering iron tip to the 'gates' inside the Molex connector (after i'd broken off the top 2mm x 4mm lever), and while simultaneously pushing the wire in, all of a sudden the wire started to slide in smoothly and normally :) so yeah i think it was just being blocked by excess solder

true, but CPUs also have a flat base but are always pasted to their heatsink (ok not a very fair comparison) so while paste isn't needed for QB's maybe it could still be worth it? i've already ordered one of those laser thermometer guns, and i successfully found the right-sized allen key for the QB's socket screws lol, so I'm tempted to try thermal paste under 1 of the 2 QB-304's attached to a single heatsink (i love side-by-side experiments!). I won't be able to determine if it lowers the overall chamber temperature though, doh. Hrmm *rubs chin* lol - hot summer here btw so I can't help but think about these things :)
Congrats on your new boards ! Thermal paste wouldnt help much as you mentionned the board is already flat and tight to the heatsink and I think overall the transfer of heat from the board to the heatsink is pretty good already.. you are probably better to just put a little cheap fan blowing over the heatsink which from some testing so far definitively reduce the heat. Difference between with fan vs without fan is one feel cool/ warm at most with the fan and without it gets pretty hot after 15-30 minutes.. here is a picture of my tent I set up yesterday.. im only left with increasing my humidity level (currently sittingg at 20-25%) and then ill be good to go to start my girlsIMG_3461.JPG

(they seem to be just aimed at circulating hot air at the top, but neither exhausting or intaking?)

thats what those fans are for man. notice the carbon scrubber and exhaust venting my guess is he has a inline fan to exhaust and passive intakes.

Lol.. I havnt set my light to the right height yet so I will adjust the fan to blow directly on the heatsink once that is done.. i have a 6inch 400cfm exhaust fan blowing air out (from the carbon filter) you dont see it in the pic because its sitting outside the tent. I also have an intake fan 4inch 200cfm blowing air in at the bottom but I think ill return it and just use passive intake.. so yeah I still have some adjustment to make here and there but overall that will be good

random Q - do these new super-efficient white LEDs like the LM561C's spell the end to the blue&red LED boxes we've been used to?

The theoretical physical limit for the phosphorus white LEDs is 260-300 lumens/watt, and they're already at 200 with LM561C, and now at 220 with LM301B which is slowly starting to appear for sale. Could the blue&red LED boxes go the way of Blockbuster VHS tapes? or could certain configs of blue&red outperform white LEDs? ♥Science

A 100% effective CRI 80 3000K LED would give you around 330 lm (=LER). Therefore the efficacy is already 220lm/330lm = 0,66 = 66 %.
Blue LEDs with an efficacy of 75 % are already available, I suppose top bin deep reds are around that as well.
So yes, blue and red will outperform white LEDs with regard of efficacy and PPF. Practically the photon flux per dollar ratio is a lot worse than with whites, that's most people choose white LEDs.
