New grower and new to smoking

You can get started pretty cheap. This grow box cost me about $200 and includes an air scrubber, it could have been at least $50 cheaper without it, and it turns out I don't need it since I only use this thing to start my plants in now. Most of the materials were already laying around.

My entire setup was around 500. Ballast, bulbs, reflector, tent, waterfarm, nutrients inline fan and filter

I would out those outside if your in a good area. They will do better, and yield more for your time. And then go to Amazon, buy 600 watt HID. You will need 1 metal halide bulb, 1 high pressure sodium. Get a exhaust fan (cann-fann, inline fan..etc) And then i would say use that closet you have. Like gut it and make it a dedicated room. Or if you want to go advanced look into building a room in your garage or something. Its really not that expensive. 500 - 600 bucks and your started. It will be a continual investment though, remember electricity. Soil, nutrients, water. Etc. Feel free to send me a message if you have questions. If your willing to learn, it will come in time.
