just started my new grow. Found some seeds in some random bags over time and I germinated them, I planted them In red cups and have about 10 sprouted. Right now their under a 54 wat. T5 Bulb. I have a couple questions. One, will Hps bulbs work for vegatative growth? I know they are primarily used for the Flowering stage. I live in an apt. with my girlfriend and I think she might have got me a new light for my grow for christmas becuase my most expensive present she said was really fragile and to not shake it :), either that or like some glass piece. Anywho if thats not the case im going to buy one soon after xmas, My buddy at my work has a 250 wat. HPS bulb thats just sitting in his garage, what should I offer him for it? Also how many wat. am I going to need for about 5-10 plants? And can an hps work through all the stages of growth or am I going to have to learn more about Metal Halides or CFL's? How much am I going to see my elec. bill go up as well? Thanks so much!!!! Seedlings sprouted yesterday and they look good for now, Hopefully I can up some pics soon. for 5 plants i would like 500 watts of hps and for 10 plants i would like 1000 watts of hps. thats just me tho i like 100 watts per plant to get very good results. you can use hps for veg for sure. it is BEST to use mh and hps, or mh during veg and hps during flowering, the whole way through but an hps will do just fine all the way. i wouldnt bother with cfls since ur ganna be investing in a hps. i have 1450 watts running and i saw a decrease in my power bill. once i hooked up the lights i knew i was going to have to be energy minded so i use cfls around the house. rarely turn on anything and just keep a constant mind on electricity use. but yes i saw my bill go down 80 dollars. oh yeah i put a timer on my water heater too. u know those things use over 3,000 watts?! welcome to the forums and hope your first grow goes off without a hitch(it wont)

aight all I guess I can do now is wait. Im going to poke holes in the bottom of my cups to give them drainage. Right now im just using tap water to water them, should I be used like purified water from the store or something?

He knows. Him and this thread died in 2007. Right around Christmas guess he really liked the new bulb
