i just ordered this air-stone rock thingy for my aero-garden. it's 6 inches and im guessing will sit on the bottom of the aerogarden. what are those 2 rods that go across the tank in teh ag?

the airstone adds oxygen to the roots. it is very beneficial !!! the pump in the aerogarden is for watering the sponge

Dittos to the airstone being essential. That AG aint really any kind of aeroponic deal its a shallow water culture (as compared to DWC..i.e. Deep Water Culture)..meaning if you dont keep it well aereated when the roots start growing and dangling into the water your chillins will shortly be deceased for lack of oxygen. The little pump it comes with dont run enough to keep it well aereated..cept maybe on the Strawberry setting where it supposed to run constantly. Walmart has the big airstrips and pumps for chump change..not sure why you had to use mail order. The two flat plastic rods are like the man said to reinforce the bowl so it dont squeeze itself together.

I found that using two small air stones are better than 1 4-5 or 6'' one ..I put one on each side .. just use a Y splitter

You cannot put to much oxygen in your rez. The more airstones the better & healthier the root system.

kaosowner: if i do a rez clean every week then how will i know how much of the nutes i should put in? i dont have a meter to test anything

I NEVER cleaned my res . I never swapped out the water .. The aerogarden Nutes have a buffer in them. There is no need to swap out the res ..only after a grow and before a fresh one .

well i would use an e.c meter but since you dont have one there is no real way for you to measure nutes anyways, i would say use 1/4th strength and work up till you see about 1/16 th - 1/8th inch of the tip of the leaves yellow. this way you will be right on the edge of over nuting but also be giving the plant as much as it can eat. the buffers in the ag nutes i believe are for adjusting ph. It would be best to do the rez changes to rid built up salts, also the plant enjoys a few days of just fresh water. Fox farms grow big works well but i would suggest also picking up some epsom salt. another thing is dont use molasses in the ag if you want to use something like that go with applejuice or a substitute nutrient like techna floras suggar daddy
